Steven Colbert has announced to Russian late night TV viewers that he is considering a run for the presidency in twenty twenty. He and his host, the most famous late night host in Russia then drank a toast together. Colbert then turned to the audience and tongue in cheek told the Russian people that he would accept any and all help in facilitating his campaign.

Love him or hate him, Colbert certainly pushes the political envelop. I myself wish him the best as someone needs to stand up to Oprah and the landslide she will create.

Thank you Trump for proving that anyone and I mean ANYONE can be president in America.

Steven Colbert also pulled a similar stunt while working for comedy central. I believe it was congress, senate, governor, or president. I suppose it didn't matter as it was a joke and ended as one.

Your distaste for the current president isn't somehow justified if you support equally ludacris reaction.

Meaning to say, wanting an entertainer to pull the pendulum in the opposite direction would not correct the problem, just bring it to a different spectrum.

Let us forget partisanship. After all, we're a country of individualism, acceptance, and diversity.

Tribalism at any degree dilutes the opportunity for anything spectacular.

Glad you could make it. If my point above means anything, surely you could appreciate your piece in the puzzle.

The ATS community laughs at the establishment and TBTB. Drain the swamp, question authority, deny arrogance... Give me a break, the biggest joke on this site is trumpets.

I voted for him yet I'm ashamed of the joke our society is to defend the man who made a name by criticizing the concervative Obama for his golf time. (golfs more)

The man who won red America, proud for his foreign "diplomacy" catered to the military industrial complex.

The real joke here is the rights feux outrage for Obama, and their support for some sheep in wolf's cloths.

So while many are self righteousness, we all see that real agenda. Just winning, no better than the neo libs who sold their party for power.

I was pretty concerned when I heard he was going to russia for the show.

I'm surprised the network would risk that. Given they are a hostile enemy government and all. Just doesn't seem safe.

He's the most self loved man I have ever meet. His vanity knows no bounds.

I thought that was the problem with this one.

You silly lefts and rights with your rights and lefts.

Quite right of course. Colbert, as a humorist , is basically adversarial, brilliantly so in my opinion but that is no reason for any sound thinking people to consider him for potus. But then I was of a mind that no sound thinking people would vote for Trump either so where's that get us.

I noted when I watched the program last night that he did not announce that he was going to run, but rather couched his announcement as ''I am considering'', which is the age old ploy of not really wanting to run but at least keeping ones voice in the game.

It's been brought up in a number of other threads lately that the possiblity of a wide open election in 2020 is greater than in the past. As I mentioned above, Trump has shown that the field no longer is limited to the leadership class, this being the career politician class. In a manner, this leadership class has given government stability while at the same time this stability has brought calcification that needs to be scraped away like the plaque from our teeth at a good cleaning.
I do appreciate that the Trump phenomena may be setting this teeth cleaning in motion but it's just that who wants a guy with a jack hammer to clean ones teeth.

My hope in 2020 is that voices like Colbert's and other intelligent people will be given more consideration in the overall political dialogue. Voices from various corners of society rather than being limited to the entrenched political class, so that truly capable leaders might emerge. College presidents, CEOs, scientists. People who would be willing to be the figurehead for 4 years. People who would be willing to serve rather than rule.

Yes, in a way it does make sense. In a comical sense to which I think you just alluded. I would not hope to see Colbert voted in as president. Indeed it would be a reactionary move as criticalstinker points out above. However it does demonstrate just what a joke our elections have become. The first one I lived through was Pat Paulson from the old Smothers Brothers Show who ran a couple of times. yeah, that was a joke and others have followed over the years. But in those cases the joke was not got by most people, that the system is the joke. Those old jokesters were seen as jokesters who were only pretending while the ''real'' candidates ran seriously.

But now, I think this may have changed. The worlds of celebrity and leadership seem to me to be colliding more and more and the possiblity that Trump may have opened the flood gates for other people who might want to follow in his foot steps based strictly on cultural popularity.

To me, an important thing is that the wider populace become aware that the system of elections IS the joke and in a sense Trump may have done more to bring about this awareness then any of us might have imagined six months ago.

Could you imagine if the average Joe ran and won the presidency.

Holy crap you people would cause your apocalypse if that happened.

The media would be twice as harsh on Joe then Trump. He wouldn't be able to get congress to work with him because they are against us.

One of us as president.

Hahahahahahahaha.

If this election has shown us anything is that this system of government won't last very long.

Reading your first reply I missed this gem from your second. Obama=conservative. Not many of us have been able to see him in this perspective. To me, thinking him a socialist, and the Clintons to boot, as so many do just paints a picture that that is far afield of reality. Sad really, not only that conservatives think them such, but that so many who think themselves liberal have really fallen under the spell of conservatism dressed in liberal rhetoric.

The real ball is the military industrial complex.

The two party system keeps us distracted from that.

While we spend more money on our military than the next eight countries combined, we can't have good affordable education and health care.

How many times have we been attacked by a country since WWII? Yet we're at constant war.

Yet Eisenhower laid out the warning and only a few from either side of the political spectrum took it seriously. My awareness of it was that the more active liberals of the sixties rioted with that phrase on their lips yet the majority of conservatives of that day would not join them in the streets. Then somehow the knowledge seemed to get lost as the liberal uprisings of that day burned out.

The blight of liberals is losing their roots.

True classic liberalism is open mindedness across all spectrums of humanity. It also believes that government shouldn't dictate liberty of the citizens.

That's not the case in America now. Certain classes and ideologies are attacked while non liberal ideologies are glorified..
The tribalist party system has eliminated individualism and here we are.

Obama was the antithesis of his "ideology", as are most "concervatives" who are against big government. American government is inflated with money projecting power not only domesticly, but internationally.

The two party system is just a distraction.

I agree, I think. The liberalism that I knew does seem to be dead. I place it's final passing with the election of Slick Willy, no, actually prior to that. It was when Carter spoke so clearly about American hegemony, how America dominated the world economically, militarily, in resourse consumption etc. He spoke a truer liberal ideal of learning to curb our own self centered gorging of the pie of world resources and the need to consume less. He was hit with a barrage of anger from the right that tossed him out after one term.

Add to that Reagan's October surprise, that fiasco in Iran that suddenly resolved it self once Carter was defeated. Add to that the hatred from corporate America at his audacity to suggest to the American people that they might want to curtail their seeming insatiable hunger for trinkets and baubles and additional flavors of potato chips. Why, that was just, UnAmerican.

This lead to what the right now sees as the uprising of the American people in 1980 when they elected their savior, Reagan. And while the right saw him in this light, the left saw him as a tool of the National Association of Manufacturer's and the drive of corporate America to put a kindly grandfather face on their drive to dominate society completely. Potato chips anyone? Coke or Pepsi.

So never mind that he was taking direction from the fascists of the business world along with wisdom from his wife and her tarot card prophets. Never mind that he had to be led around and told where to go and what to say. And never mind that his dementia was on full display by at least half way through his second term. Never mind those things. Never mind that taxes went up and up and up. Never mind that we were in war after war after war.

Thankfully that period ended. The American people wanted another liberal as potus. And so hungry were they for that to happen, they jumped at the first snake charmer to come along.

And the left right spectrum lurched to the right.
