Some kids might have 2 mommies, and some might have 2 daddies. The Prince might fall in love with another Prince instead of a princess. It doesn't totally explain the subject, but could introduce the subject without talking about sex.
If my 5 year old had a friend with two mommies - - and asked me why.
I'd tell him "Because they love each other". Nothing more needs to be said.
And I know five year olds who would say " but my mommy loves her friends .. why didn't she marry them instead of daddy? "
Some 5 year olds ask that anyway, even if homosexuality is never brought up. How would you respond?

It's not me that is having trouble understanding, no offense.
"Might"? Lol..
I've come to the conclusion that those affected from social engineering, are incapable of acknowledging social engineering.

I would respond saying there are different types of love ... and the romantic love mommy has for daddy is what created him/her because that is how God chose to create life in many species. Male and female romantic love is how procreation was intended.
I know that sounds ultra conservative but I won't apologize for answering a child's question with what I see as honesty.

Really? You are going to get into hormones with a 5 year old? And yes, the love two mommies have for each other is the same as a mommy and a daddy. Both love each other, and both love their kids with all their hearts, and that's all a 5 year old needs to know to understand it.

So no evidence. Figures.
So TV is deliberately trying to confuse children? If that is true there would be more than 84.
Good luck with your logic.
