Sounds like London is a lovely place to live. I am actually surprised that they have an "anti-slavery" police unit. Almost mind-boggling in this day and age in a 1st world nation (at least to this degree).

Building sites, restaurants and hotels are using 'forced labour', police chief warns
www.dailymail.co.uk...

London is a world hotspot for modern slavery with victims forced into hotels, restaurants and building sites, a top police officer said today.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Brewer, head of Scotland Yard's anti-slavery unit, has revealed a surge in cases in the capital in 2017 where people are working against their will, for no pay and in dangerous conditions.

Servants kept prisoner in poorer communities or in ethnic minorities also needs to be stamped out because some group think it is culturally acceptable.

Domestic servitude is also fuelled by cultural factors that might make it acceptable in some sections of London's population to have a worker from a lower social group working as a domestic slave even though it is against the law.

The only thing that will change in the future is using the term "1st world" to describe Europe.

At this point, I'd rather live in some #hole like new York.

Reading between the lines, this seems to be about those social groups who were- shall we say?- not brought up in the recent traditions of European culture.

It's called stand up for yourself and your beliefs, otherwise other will enforce their upon you with little care.

Act like a sheep, get shaved for clothing...

But that wasn't what this article was about was it...

Don't need to read between the lines, many Brits know slavery has existed here recently, the disaster at Morecambe Bay is well known, it's where 23 Chinese cockle pickers died.

I don't want to blame one sect of humanity and the report doesn't mention it, but a lot of slaves are of Asian descent.

It's not as simple as forced labour, many of them sold themselves into slavery. It's complex to say the least.

Edit:

Sex worker trafficking/slavery of Eastern Europe descent can be added too, so it's not just non-Europeans

Wherever muslims go, slavery follows.

Slavery is part and parcel of Islam, the koran amd Muhammed whose perfect, infallible slaver lifestyle is used as their role model.

There is a mobile home park up the road from me.
The guy who owns it is a traveller. He got done a few years ago for slavery..He had some homeless guys and forced them to work for nothing for his paving and tarmacking biz.
www.independent.co.uk...

Went past there the other day, outside his brick clad double wide, he had a new Rangerover in white, a new Aston Martin in Silver and a Rangerover Evoque (obviously the wife's car) Who says crime doesn't pay?

Point being, he must be up to his old tricks again...Dunno how he was allowed to keep anything. Justice would have been to take every damn thing the family owned, liquidate it and give the money as compensation to the people they enslaved.

Yes sir, slavery is indeed alive and well. In fact the entire population of North Korea are potential slaves as N Koreas number one export is labor. They sell their poor people to other countries to build products that are in turn sold the world over.

Saudi Arabia definitely utilizes slavery as does certain sectors in India. Malaysia just flat out kidnaps people takes them to a remote Island and there they sew track suits and tennies until they die.

It doesnt surprise me regarding London, particularly considering the number of aforementioned culturs that have made it their home.

There are so many ways:

East European women want to escape from their home countries and make some money. Employed as sex slaves working 16 hours/day.

Wealthy Muslims from other countries need servants. Same with Indians. Culturally, they think it demeans themselves to do manual labour. I knew Indians who would buy every gadget in the world to avoid this; washing machines, dish washers, Roombas.

Ethnic speciality shops need workers skilled in native cooking practises; takeaways, restaurants. The staff usually live upstairs and work part-time.

Some people pay smugglers to bring them into the UK. Then they pay off the debt by working for various companies.

It happens a lot because our market towns tend to have a high street formed from the conversion of terraced homes into shop fronts. The lower floors are shop premises. The upper floors are storerooms or sleeping quarters. Other countries keep the commercial and residential areas separate:

Typical high street in London: goo.gl...

There was a court case in London recently: a Qatari princess was charged with keeping 14 slaves during a visit last year. The slaves were to work around the clock and sleep on the floor of a hotel room.

There are a few chilling stories of children being kidnapped and sold to rich families in developing countries to work as slaves in their homes. Very sad.

The Arabs do this a lot, have also encountered women from Bangladesh and Pakistan who came on domestic worker visas and had their passports taken by their employers then were forced to work ridiculous hours.

You also get a lot of Vietnamese people that are forced to work in grow houses on council estates.

Slavery in Britain is quite widespread when you start digging under the facade.

It's because people exploit illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants can hardly toddle off and complain to the police because they will just be deported.

Oh, you don't mean the government sanctioned modern day slavery for the British people like zero hours contracts or job agencies?
