The current flavor is politics and there is not much you or anyone can do but let it slowly die out and the best way to do it is to stay out of the political threads.

Because you would lose money if you did.

If owning the site was just a hobby for you, it would make sense. But if the idea was to make a profit, traffic is where it is at, and cutting traffic would cut into profits.
