I'm glad she's safe now. I really hope that her being trapped in her hotel was an unintended byproduct of the protest and not the goal. There's no excuse for that.

"Unable to get security clearance" from the police essentially means the police don't have control over the situation around the guesthouse. It doesn't have anything to do with Mrs. Trump or whether she's "allowed to leave," it simply means that the police can't provide satisfactory assurances to the Secret Service that the situation is under control.

I'd be OK with the First Lady carrying about her day while the Secret Service pull an Erdogan's bodyguard move on anyone that so much as glances at her, but that's just me.

That would have been a secret service mistake. They decide the locations on presidential trips. In theory they send out agents to check the location. In this case they droped the ball. My brother is with the secret service and I asked him the dame thing he figured one of two things. Either the trip was planned last minute and the Trump administration were not sure they wanted to go. Or they had plans at a couple of locations and it was denied by the local government. Apparently any location has to be approved.
