Certainly circumstantial...yet they don't appear to be POW in this picture.


If they had a camera on board, and there were any pictures of Japanese ships... that is when they would have become POW.
She may have had no involvement with the government, but took pictures of ships along the route, and that would still be damning if the Japanese had developed the film.

The problem is that the Japanese were not occupying New Guinea in 1937, so they wouldn't have made her a POW. Especially as the war had not even started!

The latest theory regarding Amelia Earhart...

According to this unproven theory, coconut crabs on the island of Nikumaroro may have come upon Earhart’s body after she crash-landed and dismembered her remains. Parts of a skeleton whose measurements “matched the description of Amelia Earhart” were discovered on Nikumaroro by a British colonial officer in 1940, and then lost to history.

Nikumaroro is teeming with coconut crabs, which make their homes on islands in the South Pacific. The crabs earned their name because, as Charles Darwin recorded, they dismember coconuts with their pincers like nobody’s business.

Richard Jantz, an emeritus anthropology professor at the University of Tennessee, argues that bones discovered on the Pacific Island of Nikumaroro in 1940 were likely Earhart’s remains.

Sadly, unless those bones are rediscovered, or the remains of the engine of her plane is discovered, we'll never really know the truth of this. It's frustrating.
