I want to go out like Woody!

Could I get a more precise date so I don't miss it? Between now and 10,000 years is a little vague.

It's interesting to me that there hasn't been a supervolcano disaster movie yet. They've done all the other big ones: meteors, the earth's core shutting down, aliens, uh, meteors. Lots of meteor movies. No supervolcanos. Hmm.

You must not have seen this movie gem...39% fresh!

Ooooh, it's the whole movie! I guess I'll have to cancel all my plans this afternoon, start drinking heavily now and see this one through...

is the big one coming?

That's what she said.

Seriously, Yellowstone has been in eruption stand bye for the past 20 years if not more.

So don't hold your breath.

I thought that one was about a pole shift.

I don't know. My favorite volcano blog maintains that most of the magma under Yellowstone is not in an eruptible state. They think the hot spot has moved on underneath the crust. And the residual activity at Yellowstone is the magnificent death throes of a dying beast.

Yellowstone is like the old dragon that wakes from its ancient slumber
Scientist say its long overdue for a blowout
The dragon awakes

super volcano could be on the brink of erupting - which would cause widespread destruction.

Yellowstone has been unusually active, hit with more than 878 earthquakes in just over TWO WEEKS
/

The fact that there are more than 878 eq recorded in two weeks is actually a good sign. It's releasing pressure.
The moment you have to start worrying is when there are 0 earthquakes in a 2 week period.

So no, Yellowstone is not on the brink of erupting anytime soon.
It's all just a scare and I wouldn't worry about it even if I would live right next to it, there are much more urgent matters like the global warming scam for example.

Oh dude what an annoying video, had to stop it after 2 seconds of hearing this computerized voice.

The earthquakes create faults through which the caldera begins to vent. I know because I'm watching
right now, so I'm pretty much an expert.

True, we are still at essentially "business as usual" in that swarms happen there frequently, but over the last several years, there have been many times when Yellowstone has been all but asleep for weeks at a time. Actually over the last few years, it has been "quiet" and ho-hum on essentially all fronts (subsidence, geothermal activity, etc). Which, you know, I don't think worried many people.

Now, we have several overlapping swarms, which itself is a bit unusual (though that doesn't mean gloom and doom unusual, mind you). I'm sure the folks at the USGS are keeping close tabs on it. I did note that they didn't find it serious enough to update the YVO earthquake data over the weekend, so obviously they aren't too concerned.

I am curious if this will mean we transition from a time of subsidence to one of uplift, or if it all just goes back to sleep in a few days.

In reality though, I think I may be getting too technical for a post on the 'we're on the BRINK!!!' thread. So as I push this thread up on the most recent list, TrueAmerican again will start twitching violently...

I've always had a passive interest in Yellowstone but have never believed the doom porn hype that it can blow any day now. It's been an active geological area since recorded history and swarms of small earthquakes are just business as usual.

But if there's a period where the earthquakes stop, that's when I might worry some.

Perhaps Old yell is a bit sexually frustrated... 50,000 years between releases
is way to long ... even for a super volcano .

I'm only going to being to worry when the ground moves up by feet a day in stead of inches and when the earthquakes are more the mag6 range.

When she goes. We will all know.

We live in the seismically-active San Andreas Fault region, and I used to subscribe to the whole "increased earthquakes = released pressure = a good thing" mantra until attending an earthquake preparedness meeting in our neighborhood. A speaker who was a specialist in local earthquake activity said yes and no to this idea. While pressure is released from the immediate area, pressure can at the same time increase at nearby stress points. An analogy would be a picture attached to a wall would have pressure increased on the remaining nails should a few of the initial nails be removed.

Not saying this what is happening in Yellowstone, but an increase in seismic activity isn't necessarily an indication of
worse things to come nor cause for breathing a sigh of relief.

well worrying about it wont do any good ( alest with a meteor we just mite be able to deflect it of some such )
