Yep I'm the same as you, I'd prefer to carry food or water than gold.

You can't eat gold thats true, but gold itself has healing properties, they used it way back.

What is heavier a pound of spam or a pound of gold?

Healing enough you'd turn down 3 cans of tuna for the gold ring on your finger?
I'd take the tuna.

The problem is the tuna may be poisoned with mercury then what would you do?

Lol, side issue, any food could be poisoned with all sorts of things, GMO, whatever, well not GMO here in the UK, it is not allowed to be sold for human consumption.

...and your thoughts regarding gold in short to medium term after a disaster EMP event are what exactly?

First few years, maybe a decade. I'm fluid with it, it's hypothetical.

I'm willing to bet that things are back on track within the first year, maybe even within a month.

What would actually be the damage? Everything would be the same except for electricity and electrical devices. People who go through hurricanes and tornadoes where huge swaths of towns are torn up don't turn into the post-apocalyptic scene you describe and why did you go from "first few hours/day" to years.

Gold. Many times over.

Oh I was thinking of a situation where the whole world was hit.
Again I apologise for not being clear about my intended discussion.
First thread n all.

Actually they are the same. 1 pound.

100 pounds of gold would be over a million and a half dollars. Nobody is going to bug-out with hundreds of pounds of gold.

Me, I would gladly go hungry for a day and make room for a pound of gold if I'm headed somewhere where it will make starting over easier.

I get that but even if the whole world gets hit not everything will go down.

The first thing that needs to be done is rewire starters and get vehicles moving. Start rebuilding power plants and lines and essential machinery. It isn't like people will have to start from zero and reinvent everything.

I would bet all my money that everyone who considered that 'pound for pound' question came to the same conclusion.
On-topic, your gold won't buy a can of chicken soup off me if you're starving though, you can # off with it.

No need too hoard gold or food then if it ain't really a problem. Keep calm and carry on.
Sounds cool.

I did say that I would carry it if it were of value where I was headed.

I guess considering the whole post is too much to ask for?

IOW, we'd only lose pretty everything that wasn't analogue (e.g., most of the western world's entire literary and musical output since 2005); every single tax record since the mid-1980s; everyone's bank balances (and the means of accessing them); all telecommunications; in fact, anything that relied on a computer in any way, shape, or form, and not only that but we'd lose the means of making any new ones to replace them.

So that's alright, then!

Investing in gold or stocking your pantry isn't really hoarding.

Your unlikely scenario isn't really a problem but that doesn't mean that the S won't HTF.

Ammunition, maybe seeds, alcohol for sure and feminine hygiene products. Plenty of women in that situation would be glad for a box of tampons. I need a warehouse full of that stuff.
