The US has nearly 400 billion annual trade deficit with China. Because big corporations use Chinese low pay labor, almost all the goods the US can make are contracted to Chinese cheap labor. If tariff on China is raised and this deficit eliminated, the federal government would be able to use an extra hundreds of billions to fund medicaid while eliminating Obamacare taxes, win win for the middle class and the poor. Now let's see what they will do about China.

The best way to cut medicaid is to give people jobs to where they do not need it...

Dude, have you seen the inner cities? Most people there don't want to leave. People like Ben Carson who climbed out of that condition are extremely rare.

Yet, he is called an "Uncle Tom" by many of those who choose to live on the plantation rather than take his advice on how to educate themselves and shake off their shackles?

Dr. Carson worked and studied/worked his ass off to become the man he is today! Nothing in life comes for free!

So what do you do. You are not providing much here to fix the problem of people unwilling to do anything for themselves and expect the government to provide no matter how crappy that lifestyle would be. I'm not super nice in this area and if a person is unwilling to help themselves and are of full mind and body then so be it...I don't care much about them.

One big problem in big cities is it is too expensive to start new business there. If it was the cheapest place to start new business they would come...

We need to return to the pre-ACA Medicaid levels, before the ACA ballooned Medicaid into one of the US' most ridiculous Kept Voter welfare honey pots.

Agreed. Give medicaid to the ones in need. Currently there are too many people put on medicaid and they are overwhelming the system.

The solution? Stop giving free handouts. They are only prolonging and making the problem worse. There will come a time when the free handouts dry up. Whether now or later people will eventually have to work to get food and healthcare.

And herein lies the Catch22. Governments create benefits to help the poor. Government taxes business and individuals to pay for the benefits for the poor. Government builds buildings in cities and hires non revenue generating workers to pass out benefits to the poor. The poor congregate close to the benefits because they need them. City has more poor because they moved closer to the benefits. City raises taxes to pay for more poor, hires more workers to pass them out to more people. Businesses don't like taxes so they move. Now less business means less jobs means more poor. Now you find yourself in a nice little death spiral.

Have you? Climbing out of the inner cities isn't a matter of JUST willpower. It takes a considerable amount of luck and training that are in short supply in all inner cities. One success story like Ben Carson doesn't mean that anyone can do it with just a can do attitude and hard work. Carson happens to be a genius who had his college paid for with scholarships because of this.

Obama artificially inflated the number of medicaid recipients by raising the income limit to way over the poverty level.

The proposed bill would only bring it back down to the poverty level where it should be.

ObamaCare Increases Medicaid Eligibility For Millions

Under the Affordable Care Act, eligible Americans can sign up for private coverage via exchanges as well as an expanded Medicaid program. “In states that expand coverage, most individuals with incomes up to 133 percent of the Federal Poverty Level, or $15,521 for an individual and $31,721 for a family of four, will be eligible for Medicaid coverage that began January 1, 2014,” HHS said in its statement

Herein lies the problem with your logic, a tariff gets passed along in the price of goods, actually even more than the tariff because businesses generally markup products by a percentage of price of goods sold. A tariff by its nature raises the price of goods. So basically you are taking Obamacare taxes and replacing them with Import taxes. You still pull 400 billion a year (and most likely another 400 billion) out of the economy because peoples buying power decreases as the cost of the items they buy increases. In the end you have just played a shell game with tax dollars and not solved the real problem at all that no politician seems to want to address which is the actual cost of healthcare (ie doctors, hospitals, drugs) is way too high.

On the flip side a tariff might create more manufacturing jobs in this country and we could really gain competitive advantage if we used the income from the tariff to modernize our factories and drive down the cost of the products we produce.

Join the military for 4 years...get skills/education...See life actually outside of a hell hole and get out for good. I'm sure there are other ways too without being a Carson.

That is unless the military sends you to an even worse hell hole, but regardless the military isn't for everyone and that is still a narrow path to getting out of the ghettos of the country.

Yeah, China's.

Our's too. It's not like there are manufacturing plants waiting on stand by state side to take over supplying the things China's imports covered when all the imports from China are jacked up due to tariffs. You DO know how price affects supply and demand right?

It's not even always about new business being too expensive to start. They make some places in a city fairly cheap to start businesses in. The problem is that those favored economic development zones are often in parts of the city where a new business owner is going to have more of his stock stolen than he is going to sell.

Also, Medicaid levels now are at 400% of poverty which is ridiculous. The only reason I can think of why they set them there is because they knew what the ACA was going to do to premiums and that no one was going to be able to afford them and they'd wean everyone on to government welfare that way and usher in single payer - the Trojan horse mechanism the TIDES foundation schlub was talking about in his speech.

Obamacare did that and it needs to be a part of the fix.
