All that welfare really ate into their budget. Illinois has $14.5 billion in overdue bills, $130 billion in unfunded pension obligations, and no budget. “We can’t manage our money,” says Rauner. “We’re like a banana republic.” Socialism doesn't work. See USSR, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea. It just isn't efficient like free market is. They borrow and borrow and sooner or later it implodes. History repeats itself, unless one has the will to get off welfare and become free to earn happiness through labor.

And (and another ATS thread of yours) you are advocating providing "free" healthcare to those who cannot afford it? Perhaps this Illinois lesson will help with your realization of that dream as a nightmare?

Actually, it's Chicago. Their cesspool of a mayor and crime so bad that they need to be walled off worse than Mexico.

They can't pass a budget in Illinois. Looks like it's turning red in 2020.

I'm not a socialist. I suggest doctors be put on fixed 100 grand annual government salary, and be required by law to treat the unfortunate (note, not freeloaders) for free.

If the State doesn't come up with a budget by Friday June 30th, it will be downgraded to "JUNK" status, and have to shut down the state lottery.

""Illinois' budget crisis has become so dire that the state is in danger of entering a financial "death spiral," as a prominent ratings agency threatens to downgrade the state's credit score to "junk" status.

The state lotto requires a payment from the legislature each year. The current appropriation expires June 30, meaning no authority to pay prizes. In anticipation of the budget deadlock, the state already is planning to halt Powerball and Mega Millions sales.""

How would you feel if you worked for 48 years, were promised a pension, and now you find out they can't pay your retirement benefits?

The "authorities" responsible for managing these accounts and upholding the law FAILED miserably.

That would make it virtually impossible for Mayor Emmanuel to fulfill the promise he made to Mexico's President in April. Chicago is willing to accept all Mexicans who are able to sneak into the country. There will be no punishment for them in the Windy City.

My wife took early-retirement from the Illinois Education system in 2016. The state felt that "buying out" the higher paid teachers would save the system. WRONG! For the first time, retired teachers are starting to get a little worried, even though the state has run a deficit for decades.

Now now, I'm sure this is all Bush's fault! And the great right wing conspiracy!

I wish the retirees worked for 48 years. More like retire at 55 with full pension spending the last couple of years "spiking" their salary so the pension gets inflated. Grab the pension and then they go get another job.

The unions paid off the Democrat pols to accepted the fat retirement packages and the chickens are coming home to roost. This is why public unions should be outlawed. You can trust the unions and politicians will look out for the tax payer in negotiations.

100k? would make more being a salesman for a furniture store.

Who would go to school for minimum 8 years for that? you would be working to simply pay off student debt for decades. what utter nonsense.

I think it would be nice if well meaning people would get large buses and take all the illegals from around the country and dump them into Chicago...you know..because caring and stuff. Then sit back and applaud how enlightened they are by supporting all these folks.

Or at least it would speed up the inevitable.

Illinois Managed Care Organizations (MCO) are owed overdue payments of 2.8 Billion and are suing state to make payment arrangements.

Medical is 1/3 of the budget problem and growing.

Guy in charge state finances says MCO's win then they'll have to forego other mandated payments.

Basically bankrupt.

One cannot simply blame this on pensions alone.

There is no mechanism for another entity to step in and run things such as a State does with bankrupt city.

US Constitution doesn't allow for this. A State would have to become federal territory rather than a sovereign entity for this to be even quasi constitutional.

An unprecedented situation that is bound to hit many more states over next ten years.

Medical industry must be brought to heel with existing law to force cost reduction.

Illinois is canary in the mine and folks better heed warning.

Though i do think we need to address the cost of hospitals and doctors I dont think 100k a year will actually work. It costs like a 200k or more to get an education to become a doctor. I guess this could be addressed by repaying them for their college but still 100k.. You can make that with no degree by being a decent programmer.

Come up with a budget?!?!!?

What in the hell difference does a budget make if they cant manage their money?? Thats what their governor just admitted.

Theres no saving them until you rid Illinois of "them"

You cannot just keep giving money to the poor to give to businesses and the medical industry. The money goes through them to support the economy.

People cannot understand that, if you give money to a friend to pay for their operation, who are you actually giving the money to. it is going to the doctors and hospital. If you are giving someone money for their heating bill, where is the money actually going? If you are giving someone money to get drunk, who is the money actually going to.

The Democrats are trying to buy votes this way, people cannot see who actually gets the money.
