In my thread yesterday, I mentioned that I’d try to upload details of another batch of publications today. I’m trying to tie up as many loose ends as possible before turning back to my other hobbies by around the end of this week, until a week-long experiment in relation to collaboration within ufology - Project Phoenix - in November/December (as I mentioned in a recent post). I had hoped to also upload some new official UFO documents (created by project funded by the US Air Force), but am currently waiting to hear from a volunteer who lives near College Park on the outskirts of Washington DC to see if he has been able to scan/photograph the documents I requested.

The uploads covered by this thread are in the following sections:

Section 1 : Contact UK – “Awareness” : 130+ issues

Section 2 : Contact UK – “UFO Register” : 20+ issues

Section 3 : SUFOG Newsletter (UK) : 120+ issues

Section 4 : Skywatch (MAPIT) : 30+ issues

Section 5 : The Ufologer : 9 issues

Section 1 : Contact UK – “Awareness” : 130+ issues

Contact UK – which prior to 1968 had the great name of the “International Sky Scouts Association” is best known within British ufology due to the identity of its founder President – Brinsley Le Poer Trench (the 8th Earl of Clancarty). Le Poer Trench wrote several popular UFO books in the 1960-1970s (e.g. “The Sky People” and “Mysteries Visitors : The UFO Story”).

Brinsley Le Poer Trench organized a debate in the House of Lords on UFOs in 1979, involving speeches and comments by members of the House of Lords from various political parties. (Parts of those speeches are included in a summary of extracts I collated back in 2002/2003 from Hansard about UFOs).

According to the website of the relevant group (renamed “Contact UFO Research” in 1996), Brinsley Le Poer Trench became “a media consultant whenever the subject of UFOs was discussed and seemed to have cult followings all over the world. Indeed, as a result 30-50 overseas branches were set up in the 1970’s and membership overall was claimed to have reached 11,000”.

Contact’s journal “Awareness” included articles on UFO reports and also numerous articles that would now be classified as relating to “ancient alien”.

Contact has provided at least part of its archives to the AFU in Sweden for them to be scanned, so I thought it was worth asking the AFU to seek Contact UK’s permission to share scans of “Awareness”. Very promptly, that permission was sought by the AFU and received from Contact.

The 130+ issues below have been scanned by the AFU and are on the AFU’s website at THIS LINK

Section 2 : Contact UK – “UFO Register” : 20+ issues

Contact UK also published another journal, called the “UFO Register”. Permission was also sought and received for scans of this journal to be uploaded to the website of our friends at the AFU in Sweden.

This journal had a more statistical/research focus. Issue 1 bemoaned the fact that much of the UFO literature “has proved to have had little or no lasting value” and referred to the need for a publication which “set out to consistently record facts and facts alone”.

The 20+ issues below have been scanned by the AFU and are on the AFU’s website at [url=http://www.afu.se/Downloads/Magazines/United%20Kingdom/UFO%20Register%20(UK%20Contact)/[/url]

Section 3 : SUFOG Newsletter (UK) : 120+ issues

SUFOG (the “Southampton UFO Group”) started in 1990 in Southampton on the south coast of England. At its height in the early 1990s (when the X Files was a very popular show on television), SUFOG boasted more than 75 members but suffered from a wane in interest until it eventually closed in 2008.

Founding member Steve Gerrard has kindly given his permission for the SUFOG newsletter to be made freely available online on the website of the AFU in Sweden.

The 120+ issues listed below have already been scanned by our friends at the AFU in Sweden. (The collection is relatively complete after issue 16).

These isseus are now on the AFU’s website at this link

Section 4 : Skywatch (MAPIT) : 30+ issues

Another regional UFO/fortean group in England, MAPIT (the “Manchester's Association of Paranormal Investigation & Training”) has also kindly given its permission for its newsletter (“Skywatch”) to be scanned and uploaded to the website of the AFU in Sweden.

The MAPIT website includes the following about its history and its current Chairman, Steve Mera:

MAPIT and its Chairman Steve Mera
A few details
MAPIT was Founded in 1974 by David Rees who spent the best part of 15 years investigating claims of aerial phenomena. David was featured on several television shows during the late 70s and early 80s. He also was a regular contributor to local newspapers and news-stand magazines and was editor of Skywatch Magazine. In later years the organisation was passed to Chairman Stephen Mera who continues David's work to date.
Stephen first became interested in the subject of UFOs and the Paranormal at an early age and after leaving secondary school he studied at both South Trafford College and North Trafford College along with GEC Electrical for over 10 years and obtained a Degree in Electrical Engineering. During this time Stephen began conducting research which lead to numerous investigations which he carried out on his own, until opening Cheshire UFO Group.
In 1989 Stephen worked in Essex for NATO - (RAF Weatherfield) as a Telecommunications Officer. After which Stephen took over the running of MAPIT: (Manchester Aerial Phenomena Investigation Team) formally run by David Reese. Stephen also joined BUFORA; (British UFO Research Association) and became a Regional Investigative Co-ordinator and Tutor.
During the early 90's Stephen started writing the BITC; (British Investigators Training Course) in Anomalous Phenomena which today is the most recognised course of its kind internationally. The BITC currently comes in basic and advanced levels. Stephen completed his Pre-Degree Psychology at South Trafford College and in early 1996 Stephen sat the 7370 Teachers Course and went onto tutor at Sale Grammar School. He was also conducting science lectures at many schools and colleges around the country. During the latter part of 1996 Stephen reformed MAPIT and also assisted in the launch of MARA; (Merseyside Anomalies Research Association). Stephen assisted with the launch of NUFORA; (The National UFO Research Association) and numerous other organisations. Stephen was also a member and investigator with NARO; (Northern Anomalies Research Organisation) ran by Peter Hough & Jenny Randles.

Steve Mera is also the founder of Phenomena Magazine.

This UFO newsletter was published by an American (Jim Villard) in the 1950s and copies are now _very_ rare. Since it was published by an American pre-1964, this publication is in the public domain under American copyright rules due to the failure to renew its copyright by registration.
