Founding fathers were freedom loving. Low tax. Few welfare. That's why they did the revolution. If half the nation is dependent on welfare paid by high tax, the socialist candidate would always win the popular vote because people on welfare have no choice. They have to vote for socialist or die if tax goes down. That's why founding fathers made electoral college, unlike voting in any other nation, to prevent socialists gaining power by making lots of people dependent on welfare and forced to vote for socialists.

In 2016, the electoral college worked exactly as it was designed to - stopping mob rule from pockets of the country (like LA and NY) dictating the lives of all.

They were indeed geniuses, learning from the mistakes of fallen democracies, like Rome.

Can you explain how so many electoral votes per state based on population prevents a socialist president? Socialism isn't popular in the US, that's why we don't have it. It has nothing to do with the EC.

Big states are more socialist. Big states have more population. EC punishes states that have more population and benefits states that have smaller population.

Big states are socialist because poor people stay home on welfare with nothing to do and have lots of kids. Look at Syria. Because of socialism, Syria population went from 4 million in 1960 to 20 million in 2010. Too many people, not enough natural resources. War.

Big states have more people because they stay home on welfare? This comment shows that Trump was right when he said he loves the uneducated!

They also HATED inherited, dynastic WEALTH.

That is WHY we have an "estate tax".

The "founders" were the PROGRESSIVES of their time, fighting against the "status quo" and pushing for RADICAL NEW CHANGE.

Just pat them on the HEAD and move on. They know NOT what they are. Dunning-Kruger effect.

Close but no cigar... something resembling the estate tax made an appearance during trying time (war), but were repealed shortly after peace broke out... what we have now did not start till around 1916.

Also the ultra rich do not have much trouble with this, as usual it actually has an effect on Middle class people who do not have the money to hire tax attorneys to find them loop holes to keep the money in the family.

The way I see it the Electoral College system levels the playing field between areas with high and low population areas, simple in nature but I believe if you wanted to change it it would take at least a 2/3 majority in both houses.

I don't doubt that back in the 1800's the electoral college had its place.

But not today in 2017 when its possible to win a election with only 22% of the populal vote and one individuals vote in one part of the county carries more weight than another voter in another state

This video sums it up pretty well

So, you would rather two states control the selection of the president, California and New York? Screw the people (or is that deplorables) in the other states. They are just uneducated anyways, after all they don't live in the metro hubs so what do they know. Without the EC, that is what would happen, for EVERY election.

No thanks. I'll stick with the EC, developed by intelligent people.

I find it funny that democrats are blaming the electoral college system when in reality it favors them out of the starting gate. The democrats automatically start with NY California, Illonois Mass New Jersey and republicans get Nebraska Idaho etc. gee whiz they just need to win a few swing states and they win. they ran a terrible campaign and fell asleep at the wheel. Enough with popular vote excuse Trump campaign paid no attention to California and New York and rightfully so

When women weren't allowed to vote, there is no way i would call the EC an act of " Genius "

In fact far from it.

You've managed to only make some pretty juvenile statements with regard to socialism and the electoral college.

I don't see what connection this has to Syria. Syrian government is a Ba'ath party government similar to what Saddam Hussein had. He was a Islamic totalitarian dictator, much like Bashar Al-Assad in Syria. They are certainly not socialists as it is understood in the west.

Which would then give all representation to coastal states like California and New York and the entire center of the nation would lose their voice.

The EC is there for a reason and will continue to be.

Popular vote BS means nothing and it's just another attempt by the left to rule by mob.

I never said I had any idea for a better system just that the current system is rubbish.

When a system says a guy in Utah has more of a say over a guy in Florida and someone can win with 22% of the vote then your whole democratic system is a utter joke. (Before you say it, yes i know America is a federal republic)

Actually watch that video.

if you take the top 10 largest cities in the USA the by population they make up less that 10% of the total population.

The electoral college like so many things "American" is dated, its a system that needs modernised.
