Most of the Venezuelan elites made their money and gained their power under Caldera's national convergence party which was in power before Chavez got in and attempted his quasi Bolivarian socialist revolution.

They owned the non nationalised media and waged am intense CIA backed propaganda war during the attempted coup which backfired.
