Sorry that I somehow missed this excellent response along the way--
First, thank you for the well thought out post!
If you haven't read the speech I referenced in the OP, I would definitely recommend it! As daskakik pointed out, there is no hard evidence that Dr Day gave this speech at all as it was recorded by memory nearly 20 years later,
but there is so much truth to it that it has really grabbed my attention. An excerpt:

You missed the point. The purpose of knowing who they are isn't to send them a christmas card during the holidays.

The point is that in order to back up the claim that they are scared and even that individualism is some kind of threat to them you have to identify them and then argue why this would be the case.

Until you do that you are just taking stabs in the dark.
