The ACX chrystal is a whopping great container ship you'd see 30 miles away, something is seriously wrong here.

I don't know yet but I'm looking forward to finding out for sure.

Like KHNUM said - that thing is HUGE - how they could have hit it? Hard to say.

I didn't see anything in your sources about casualties. Where did you see that?
It just mentions there may be possible injuries.

Anyway, I haven't heard of any collisions in a while. I remember there was a small rash of groundings 5 or maybe 10 years ago. You'd think they would have foolproof systems to prevent collisions by now. It's only fricken 2017.

No doubt...the captain of the destroyer is going to lose his command over this one.

I edited it and used the wrong cut paste. Thanks for the heads up.

Wow, that Merchant ship must have been big. It looks like the merchant ship ran into the side of that destroyer. That is a lot of damage. I wonder how much damage to the merchant ship? The front bow is way stronger than the side of that destroyer. So, merchant ships can make formidable weapons.

IMO, from the angle of the damage, it would appear the cargo ship ran into the destroyer.

The ship's home port is in the Phillipines, recently it has been running cargo amongst Japanese ports. The ship was built in 2008.

Would beg the question of why the destroyer, which has to be agiler then that behemoth of a cargo ship, didn't get out of the way?

Even though it was night time, with men on watch and radar, hard to believe this would happen. But then it obviously does.

Unless the destroyer meant to hit the AXC?

On marinetraffic.com just now the AXC had a 'status' of "Not under Command" whatever that means.

The term "vessel not under command" means a vessel which through some exceptional circumstance is unable to maneuver as required by these Rules and is therefore unable to keep out of the way of another vessel.

Before or after?

Hmm..

Was this intentional, depending on when that status was initiated could signify if this was accidental, or offensive in nature.

Wouldn't that be something, a terrorist getting control of a ship and ramming a hated enemy?

The USN requesting Japanese coastguard assistance is very troubling. Suspect it means the US warship is in real trouble. Hope the warship makes it to safe harbour and that injuries are few.

Yea, US naval vessels don't play well with things getting too close. This is either gross negligence or something else is in the works....

Flooding in three compartments. They are bailing as fast as possible. Merchant ship plowed into the side of the DDG. There MAY be extensive damage below the water line because of the bulbous bow of the merchant ship. In other words, damage may be much worse than it looks. Merchant ship hit the starboard side of the DDG, so merchant ship had the right of way. CO has been in command 1.5 years. XO just got on board in March. With modern radar, etc. it's amazing that such a thing could happen these days. Heads will roll on this one.
