"Pictures, or it didn't happen", seems to be the mantra of the day. Everyone wants a picture. They want to "see" the severed limb, the broken body, the crumpled car or airplane. Without a picture, it seemingly didn't happen. This is our society today, "we need to see the GORE...we NEED it,...we can't LIVE without it!!" Show me the pictures! I don't believe you unless you've got a picture of the dead people, and the carnage...and the BLOOD!! We need PICTURES!!

Why is the media is powerful as it is? Why? Because they have the "PICTURES", they show you the GORE, the DEATH...the DESTRUCTION, ...the FIRE, the HORROR and the utter DESPAIR. "Pictures or it didn't happen???" Really??? Why would I show pictures of horrific things I've seen just to placate you, and your unending thirst for death, destruction and hardship??? WHY???

No, sorry, there are NO pictures! And, yes, it DID happen, but I don't feel the need to fulfill your vicarious and twisted desire by showing you the pictures as some kind of "proof" which should make me feel better...because it doesn't. It just makes YOU feel better, and I'm sick of it! I'm SICK of the media, and their bottom sucking catering to people who want nothing more than to see the pictures of the flaming car accident, the pictures of the life flight helicopters taking off with the broken bodies and blood, and gore! That's ALL they want! Hell, they don't even have the sound turned up...they just want the pictures!!!

Well, you know what? One GREAT BIG thing we could all do to fix the BROKEN media is to just stop them from showing the PICTURES of all the riots, the fires, the death, the destruction and the gore. Just report the facts...stop with the pictures!!

No more pictures!!! DAMMIT!

Some say pictures speak a thousand words.

Perhaps this is 999 words too many.

Maybe as a society we should stop the wanton visceral need for pictures of everything.

Maybe we should just all read the written word for once, something long forgotten, and decide if we want our imaginations to dwell on the images those words create...or if we have better things to do with our lives, in this wonderful place we call "life".

Perhaps, pictures; perhaps social media and instant gratification are really what lead to the impotence of society as a whole. Living in the moment, with only selfish pursuit...why can't people see this for what it is?

Can We outlaw pictures AFTER I sell My last "Selfie Stick" ?

I also visit a bass fishing website and those folks are really good at getting pics and I'm not just typing about the fish caught. Tow vehicle check√ New rod check√

I've also noticed that when I see folks that are in that stands at a baseball game will be holding their phone to record some event, but they aren't watching the game "Live" they are watching it through their phone.. It also seems these are the same people that don't know how to record things because they're holding the phone w/the 'short view'..

I'm just glad I know what I look like....

Drawing by courtroom artist... or it didn't happen.

Sketch by liberal arts major... or it didn't happen.

Modern dance impression of the event... or it didn't happen.

Again, it is as if people today don't even know how to conduct their lives, how to measure their own reality, unless they have some "picture" to compare themselves to. it's sad really.

I just gasp when I see people taking "selfies" of themselves. It shocks me. I would bet real money these same people don't even know the names of their next door neighbors...but they have pictures, pictures of themselves in their selfish little bubble of a world. They judge these pictures with pictures from others of the world outside them...this is their life! This is how they live now. It's tragic, and it's very sad.

No, there are no more pictures.

(...and even more sadly...I am a photographer).

Did I? So what did I win?

Did I win something worthwhile? I wonder.

Or, did I just win acceptance in the moment? Internet style.

Is this what we have all become?

I actually feel your pain. You stated that you are a "photographer", so I assume old school. Calculating f-stops and shutterspeeds on the fly. Every shot that was taken was well thought out... film and processing were expensive.

I miss those days. Photography was both art, and science.

Now, any moron with a phone can snap a pic and toss it on the interwebz in real time... with zero thought as to the content, or impact that the photo may have.

Beyond that, we live in a culture that wants to be shocked. How many "shocking video" shows are carried on cable networks? I watch them. I admit it... morbid curiosity.

This is a sad, strange little world...

I think it has something to do with a need for instant gratification. People's lives are so boring, they live vicariously through the media. They have to tune in so they can be a part of the "social discussion". All the world's knowledge at their fingertips, you can literally learn any subject under the sun and beyond, but too many folks just want to use the internet to show off how irreverently witty they can be. They want to be able to say the most visually gruesome comments and claim they are just being sarcastic. Everyone wants to be an entertainer instead of an engineer. Probably because entertainers have taken the forefront in earnings lately.

Saw a lot of that when I was on vacation.

Want to see something that looks weird and pathetic? Try looking at people with a selfie stick taking pictures of themselves lying in the pool, or while lying on the beach by the ocean.

I met a lovely family that were vacationing from South Africa. The father and mother were taking turns taking pictures with the children. I offered to take pictures of them together as a family, and they were so pleased. Turned out we were staying at the same resort and we ended up having dinner and drinks together on a couple of occasions.

I never would have met them if they had had a selfie stick. I am not knocking selfie sticks. I am sure they have their purpose, but in a social environment, they can make you look anti-social.

Yes, all that stuff, all those practices...a photo actually meant something. It carried an emotion if done properly.

It said things which could not be otherwise said. Today they are meaningless. Retouched, photoshopped, skewed, manipulated and twisted into whatever someone wants, yet selfie sticks and self indulgence reign supreme.

Yeah, I hung on to film photography way too long, but even I eventually caved to digital. My reasoning was mostly due to the dwindling resources for film and development of color photography (in a quality format, not drug store stuff).

I still try to hold true to the standard of capturing the "real" image, in the real moment, and not trying to change the setting, format or context (which is so prevalent today). Perhaps a purist, but I digress.

This post, the OP anyway, wasn't really about my photographic exploits, but rather the obsession of our society with the notion that unless someone has a photo of the gore, porn, or whatever...it didn't happen. It's like it's some unwritten rule anymore, and it's disgusting!

The instant gratification piece, is how our society survives anymore; without it, they seemingly cannot carry on. So, in their minds, they build this wall which blocks out their rational thought...like it didn't happen at all, unless there's a picture which they can digest instantly and move on.

Suppress the caption, we don't need words, we just want the picture; show us the picture, NOW DAMMIT...else it didn't happen! (i.e. sticking my fingers in my ears and mumbling LALALALALALALALA)

This. It's scientifically proven that likes and comments etc, releases dopamine in your brains. Same thing happens when you take drugs and get high, so really what's going on is we have an entire generation and society full of cyber stoners. Even here on ATS we are a bunch of stoners. Luckily for us though, ATS isn't so bad and is actually more beneficial than anything.

You ever try the drug Facebook and Twitter?

It definitely speaks to the sort of macabre society that we have become. Death is no longer enough, it has to be graphic, and, more importantly, it has to drive the ratings. Rating mean money from advertisers. CNN thrived on this for years...

Sadly, there is an undercurrent in society that really thrives on gore and carnage. The totally desensitized. Human life has no meaning.

I believe that our creator abhors that taking of innocent life... and, I am pretty sure that those that profit from it are equally culpable.

"If it bleeds, it leads." is the mantra of the media. These days, with camera phones, the average person has jumped right in. I LOVE taking pictures, to share things with people, but this sensation-seeking mentality of so many, and the self-promotion, has gone way too far!

Can we share pics of a beautiful sunset? A cute, sleeping cat? A smiling child? Some funny pet video? We don't need pics of violence all the time.

Something like that..
