Qatar has signed the contract to buy 36 F-15QAs from Boeing. Qatari Defense Minister Khalid Al-Attiyah was in Washington to sign the FMS agreement with his counterpart Jim Mattis.

alert5.com...

The contract might expand to 72.

I guess the F-15 line will stay in business.

FWIW, the USN is planning on buying 80 Rhinos, too. That'd make the Rhino line safe, too.

This was in the making long before (going years back) the current situation.

This deal was held up under the Obama administration for at least three years. It's one reason that at least one ally in the region started shopping Russian fighters, because this deal and the Kuwait F-18 deal were held up for so long. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Saudi situation. This kind of deal isn't done in a weekend, it usually takes at least a year of negotiation just to determine on board equipment and price.

I believe that congress was notified in November of 2016 about the proposed sale so this would be as Zaph noted not started under the present administration.

What concerns me however is that the F-15QA will in all likelihood be a copy of the -15SA which is the most advanced strike Eagle ever produced, including AESA, IRST, fly by wire etc. and the USAF is talking about flying the -Cand -D's off to the boneyard. If we are going to sell more advanced weapons, perhaps the cost should include bringing a comparable number of USAF or USN's up to the export spec.

We all just assume that Saudi will be our friend forever. When that revolution occurs, we may have to fight those very aircraft in the skies over the ME. We got lucky that the Shah farmed out alot of his MRO and many Tomcats were crippled by techs leaving after his fall. We may not get so lucky next time

That's when they were finally approved. The initial agreement was sometime in 2015, but Israel raised concerns over it, so the deal sat in limbo for a year and a half.
