A series of marches against Sharia, a strict form of Islamic law, are set to take place in dozens of cities across the United States on Saturday.
The nationwide rallies, dubbed the "March Against Sharia," coincide with the Muslim holiday Ramadan and are sponsored by ACT for America, an organization with chapters around the country that calls itself "the NRA of national security." But critics say ACT for America is a "hate group" known for aggressively criticizing Islam and promoting a distorted, prejudiced view of the religion.
ACT for America activists believe Islamic law is largely incompatible with American democracy and basic human rights, and they often warn of a surreptitious effort to replace U.S. law with Sharia. The organization, anchored in Washington, D.C., states on its website that it condemns bias against religious groups and is "proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with peaceful Western Muslims as well as peaceful Muslims worldwide."
An anti-Muslim activist group is rallying in numerous cities across the country, marching in opposition to Islamic law, which the group believes is threatening American society.
ACT for America, a lobbyist organization with close ties to the Trump administration that has helped pass state-level bills targeting Islamic law and refugees, organized the protests as a nationwide “March Against Sharia.”
