Consider how easy it would be for someone to shut things like this down though.

You don't like a group, you send someone in to infiltrate by establishing a presence at one rally. Then that person does something worthy of getting the rally canceled or postponed out of respect.

If you are fanatic enough to riot, then you aren't far from that.

That line of thought has no end, though. You could say that Hitler was anti-German and only wanted people to hate Germans, if you took that idea far enough.

It could happen, sure but... it's probably not the safest bet to use that theory as a default.

I've been guilty of thinking that way. With Trump. When he first started talking about Obama's birth certificate, I only remembered him as being pro-choice, pro-marriage equality, pro-single payer health care, etc. I thought he was just trolling to make conservatives look bad. I continued that theory until a couple of months after he was elected president. Then I realized he wasn't just a liberal troll but he seriously believed his new positions.

Sometimes people change and are really the monsters they claim to be. Contrary to popular belief, people can change their spots AND their stripes.

Don't let my example paint the argument. Replace Trump with any example and you'll get the idea. It's simply not a logical default to assume somebody is a plant to make their opposing team look bad. That road is madness and makes the whole world suck. Please don't tell me the world sucks that bad.

I'm cool with free speech.
Must have been a lockdown on speaking freely in Portland?

Otherwise it just seems like Trolling for reactions.

Watching KOIN6 News out of Portland now.

Not. One. Word. About juice boxes.

Nothing.

*sigh*

The terrorists have won.

I have juice boxes. It's the only reason I have a boyfriend. Having a kid has its perks.

How else do you think I bring the boys to the yard? It's not a milkshake.

I didn't.

I am just saying that if the rules of your game are to force everyone to never hold a rally out of respect if it would look bad or offend someone for a period of time after an incident that might be related in some way ... then this becomes a viable tactic to use to stop free speech from ever happening.

Consider a rally for school choice. Assume that some family who had gotten their child into a school on a voucher has that child molested by a teacher in the voucher school, and they demand the rally be postponed out of "respect" because it was school choice that put their child in harm's way.

Do you see where this is going?

it would be far too easy to find any and every excuse to postpone rallies where speech someone didn't like was taking place out of some sort of "respect."

It's why all the arrests have been on the ANTIFA side.

No juice boxes.

They were probably told there would be cake.

Betcha no cake either.

It's one of the signs of the apocalypse.

No cake or juice boxes.

If that molesting teacher shouted "school choice" while he did it and previously attended "school choice" rallies... yeah, I'd say they should give that city a month or two to cool off and heal before swooping in and rubbing salt in the wound.

Juice boxes are hard to recycle. Cake has eggs.

It's like you don't even know us anymore!

You can't back out of nonsense by making it more awesome.

Just admit you dig bondage computer ladies and we can move past this.

Why can't ATS be restricted to aliens, cake, and bondage femmebots?

If we did, you and I would probably find a lot of common ground. Instead, we have all this ugliness between us (and everybody else).

I motion to create an "Below Bottom Public Knowledge" site where we can all just discuss those things.

In real life, I am very Geeky. I have two Yodas, a Washburn Hoburn, and a LEGO minifig of my alma mater mascot on my desk at work. I likely have about five different Batman tees.

Just because my personal philosophy in life is different from yours doesn't mean I don't have my fun; it just means I keep it in perspective and context with the way I live and I much suspect you do too.

And I am right now staring at a Jayne Cobb, a dragon and a Batman poster.

Problem is, the people who are yelling, boycotting, etc aren't listening. They have reached their own conclusions inside their own echo chambers and don't feel the need to actually debate or find middle ground. To them, anything that opposes their paradigm is hate and must be shut down.

Which makes *them* the assholes.
