Let us not forget banning slavery, emancipation and banning slave trade are different...tettitories, commonwealth's and colonies....also different rules. (e.g. all of South America and the carribean)

To your point. The U.S. emancipated before many European nations and kingdoms.

Of course it was a joke and it's not offensive to me, personally, because it was meant as a joke.

It would be offensive if he said it with hateful or bigoted intent.

Shouldn't matter if it was offensive or not. If people don't like it they can stop watching the show.

Me, I have never watched it so I don't care.

The only thing I care about is the hypocrisy if there are no triggerings from people who would freak out if a conservative said it.

so many words that are excepted in society regardless of race .
The F bomb the b bomb the d bomb ( which is so excepted I could type it out here and not be baned )
And many many more . Funny I personly think it makes people look foolish uneducated and know most of the time the words are used to belittle someone male or female .
So you feel left out because you cant go around calling people the n word do you ?
Well go around calling them the b word or us the f word I promise the response from many will be no different then as if you used the N word .
You know the black who love to use it with each other are only bring down all blacks them self are only reaffirming the racism they hate and have become what they hate .
This guy is a poor funny man when all you have to make people laugh is that .
And i say the same for any funny man who needs a racial joke to be funny .
Eddy Murphy was slime in his younger days every other word was F B N never turned him on disgusting .
But he grew up realized just how childish he sounded learned he could be funny without these words and became one of the better ones .
His fan base grew by alest one the ones who love using thous words still watched him and the rest started to .
The last big movies he made were so clean and even meant for children I commend him anyone can change and he is a good roll model .
Tell you what go show how foolish it is and learn to cuss in other langues . After all its not only English .
every has words to put others down with .

Maher is a hate-fueled America-loathing leftist...
because you disagree with him...(always a chuckle watching conservatives clutch their pearls.)

...but he shouldn't be fired for this.
Here I agree. I have watched his shows regularly for many years. Maher specialises in edgy humour. Sometimes he pisses me off, especially when he has a tantrum about Islam. Nobody gets much mercy as he is just as apt to call out Liberal hypocrisy as he is Conservative. Coming from a Jewish/Catholic background, he claims rights of inclusivity to mock both of those peoples with a a paasion, and he can get away with it.

He has been a good friend and ally to the blacks. Good enough that I see him figuring that his credentials would enable him to get away with the 'house 'n-word'' comment. Apparently not. Personally, I'm not disappointed in him, because if he is not pissing you off at some point, he is failing in his job.

I can't tell a person of colour whether or not they should take offence, but I think I'd curb the outrage just a mite. Good friends can be tough to find.

Two types of white people:

1. White people who get upset (rightly so) at other white people who use a racially-charged word that has a bloody and terribly history.

2. White people who get upset because they "aren't allowed" to say a certain racist word.

I get it that black people can use/say that word all the time with no one up in arms. That doesn't bother me. Why? Black people didn't own other human beings in America like property and use that word to describe them. And this was all less than 200 years ago.

Less than 200 years ago white plantation owners in this country owned black people as if they were farm equipment. They used a certain word to describe them.

I honestly have no problem if white people are socially chastised for using it. If black people want to use it -- that's an internal issue and conversation for the black community to have among themselves, it's not for me -- a white dude to step in and try and tell them that they also shouldn't use the word.

Um, you are aware that Black people in Africa sold other black people to slave traders, right? So while black people didn't "own" slaves, they did, just not for long. It's called history.

You obviously didn't read my post.

I said:

Black people didn't own other human beings in America like property and use that word to describe them.

But hey, let's excuse the entire slave trade and clean our hands of a shameful past!

That kind of talk I'd expect to hear over on a white supremacist website, where neo nazi's justify slavery.

So we are just hating on the US slaver brokers and owners. Got it. Do let me know if the conversation moves to the origin of slavery. I think it was a disgusting time in our history, but one that really did happen, and understanding it, is key to making damn sure it never happens again.

Sorry about the history thing.
