The US government is buying the town of Playas, New Mexico to use for training anti-terror and emergency response personnel. The town has a population
of 50, and is the property of Phelps Dodge, a mining company. Phelps Dodge built the town in the early 1970's to support it's mining employees and
their families. The selling price was said to be $5 million.

The United States Department of Homeland Security is buying an entire town in the south-west US for use in its anti-terror training.
Emergency workers will use the site to simulate suicide bombings, anthrax attacks and water-supply poisonings.
A local engineering school, the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, is in charge of the project.
Vice-president Van Romero told BBC News Online that he hoped the purchase would be completed this week.
"Students will use the town to enact scenarios to learn to stop or prevent terrorist attacks before they happen," he said. "It's an urban
environment in which we can control everything - the electricity, the water and the people," he added.

This purchase will allow anti-terror and supporting personnel to train in tactics to combat urban terror situations. Training of this type is sorely
needed by US personnel, since we have been virtually isolated from the type of urban terror attacks that have plagued other parts of the world. In
addition to providing a training ground for the military, it will give emergency personnel a much needed theatre for preparing for and reacting to
terror situations in heavily populated areas.
