Of relevance here is that the leader of the Philippines has been in an active effort to fight and rid the country form ISIS militants. Some areas (the southern island now) are under martial law as a result, and this might expand that to a wider areas.

UPDATE:
- The nearby airport terminal 3 is on heightened alert
- The shooting began about 11:30pm local time
- Official briefing scheduled for about 2hrs from now
- Media is being asked not to take video of the scene

Its likely related to the crackdown on daesh aligned militants in Marawi. It all went to hell when Duterte started spouting off again about leaving the US sphere of influence a couple weeks ago. I would certainly hope he understood there would be repercussions for saying and trying to do such things.

They have already called in air strikes on the southern island (which is majority Muslim population) when the ISIS militants attacked and took over the main town there. That entire island is under martial law now.

Wow.. It's amazing how safe we are in America, by comparison. The Philippines is a modern country isn't it? (Never been there.)

The locals will lynch these f#ckers,

I do believe there will be a major backlash against any Muslim regardless of their ties..

The Filipinos are not people that mess around, there is a lot of talk of funding going to the Daesh element in PH, but it really needs its own thread to explain..

Gonna ask the misses to call her family I believe her brother is near there, will update if anything come out..

Just read the headlines on skynews!

Sounds like ISIS don't want to rest.

Now now everyone, calm down, don't raise the terrorism blame flag yet, there is no proof, no proof and the media do not want to commit to that claim. Notwithstanding the current conflict with Muslims, that several men dressed in black with long guns stormed the building, shooting their way in.....nope, don't you dare assume Isis terrorists are responsible yet. It is probably the Ninjas. Yep, that's it. Ninjas. Rolls eyes.

It will be great to see other countries stand up to the Jihadi terrorist once and for all and knock them down hard.

it is nothing new, which means it has nothing to do with "getting away" from the US. Muslims have been fighting here for hundreds of years.

That region has been a cluster f#ck forever, there are a few expats members on here that resided there but have since moved on from the area due to the absurd situation that is taking place.. It is a no go for westerners and it seems non believers, funny how many off limit locations in the world have one single trait that is the same!!!!!!!...

There is talk in PH that this is being funded by people who oppose what Duterte is doing, the Philippines had one of the most corrupt governments and elites of any so called developed country, there are more than a few people that want Duterte gone. This uprising is one way of attempting to throw the country into turmoil. There are plenty of people facing major corruption charges and who have a lot to loose, the filipino people are 100% behind Duterte regardless how the situation will look to a western mind.. The average person will have zero issue if the whole region was blown back to the stone age..

please this has almost nothing to do with Duterte. and the Filipino people are most assuredly not behind him 100%. there are a lot of Filipinos against him who are not elites. but everything else you said is pretty accurate. it shows how bad Muslims can be when a peace treaty is signed and all it really does is cause most of them to splinter off from those that signed it. they have no interest in peace until the world is under their religion's control. my friend who was their captive said after they were freed that they talked to their captors. they said they would not stop until they are in charge of the Philippines as a caliphate. they asked if they would stop if that happened. the answer was NO.

UPDATE: I just saw a blurb reported on the MSM that the motive was robbery, and not terrorism.

The country's police chief Ronald dela Rosa said the lone gunman had not fired at people and had headed straight towards the room where the gambling chips were kept. He told reporters at the scene: "Don't panic, this is not a cause for alarm. We cannot attribute this to terrorism. "We are looking into a robbery angle because he did not hurt any people and went straight to the casino chips storage room. "He parked at the second floor and barged into the casino, shooting large TV screens and poured gasoline on a table setting it on fire."

The Sun (UK): Masked gunman storms Manila hotel and opens fire in brutal ‘casino chips robbery’ as terrified guests leap out of windows amid claims it was an ‘ISIS’ terror attack

Just heard the same here on radio in Australia; motive is thought to be robbery. I'd agree based on the reprt of what went down, but I'd bet the perp knew people would think it's a terrorist attack and run for the hills.

Very opportunistic if you ask me.
