Christian’s Facebook page revealed obsessive concern with various far right themes. In recent weeks he posted memes and other material attacking “anti-fascist” protesters who have clashed with various “alt-right” rallies around the country. In the lead-up to the April free speech rally, he posted: “Looking for a couple guys or gals down to unmask anyone wear[ing] a mask at the upcoming Free Speech March”, referring to the antifascist practice of disguising protesters’ identities.

Christian also posted openly antisemitic and neo-Nazi material. On 9 May, he claimed to have challenged Nuremberg prosecutor Ben Ferencz to a debate, in which “I will defend the Nazis”. The same day, he posted “Hail Vinland!!! Hail Victory!!!”, combining a familiar catchphrase that was used at a post-election rally by the activist Richard Spencer with the far-right concept of “Vinland”.

Portland-based anti-fascist researcher Shane Burley, author of the forthcoming book Fascism Today, told the Guardian that “Vinland” refers to the area of eastern Canada that Leif Erikson supposedly settled from Iceland. On the far right, he said, it is used as a way of asserting that white nationalists “are Vikings in a new land continuing the ancient battle for the preservation of their people.”

Christian wrote several recent posts opposing male circumcision, writing “I want a job in Norway cutting off the heads of people that circumcize babies” and posting articles about recent attempts in Norway to ban on the practice. Circumcision, Burley said, “is a common men’s rights activist talking point to signify a culture-wide persecution of men.”

Christian’s engagement with far right politics may be relatively new. A person who knew him in Portland’s heavy metal scene, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that when he first encountered him eight years ago he was apolitical. “Jeremy has always been an extremely damaged person since I’ve known him,” the person said. “He practically grew up in prison and his childhood was horrific but I’ve always known him to have a kind heart.”

Police identified the deceased victims as Taliesin Namkai-Meche, 23, of Southeast Portland and Ricky John Best, 53, of Happy Valley. The surviving victim, Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, of Southeast Portland, is being treated at a Portland hospital.

“The current political climate allows far too much room for those who spread bigotry,” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler Saturday afternoon.

Namkai-Meche graduated with a degree in economics from Reed College in 2016. In a public Facebook post, his mother Asha Deliverance said: “He was a hero and will remain a hero on the other side of the veil. Shining bright star I love you forever.”

Best was an Army veteran who worked for the city of Portland at the Bureau of Developments Services. Micah David-Cole Fletcher is an alumni of Madison High School.

In 2013 he won the Literary Arts poetry slam competition “Verselandia.” Along with the other finalists, he performed and reflected on his poetry on OPB’s Think Out Loud. He said:

“It’s the other people that need to be heard now. The one thing I think all the negative experiences in my life have taught me, if anything, is that it is not about you. You are one person. On one planet in one galaxy in one universe,” said David-Cole Fletcher.

“Trust me, you by yourself are not what makes everything so beautiful. It’s the combination, the coming together of all these different people from different backgrounds with different beliefs coinciding with one another, the interactions between them and the different products of those interactions that’s what makes society so great,” he said.

I read the stories, but didn't bother posting as I knew
ass hats would go straight for the brush off, but I had warned folks that an up tick in white supremacist violence would take hold following a Trump win..but many was like...naaw Spider you just over reacting.
Am I blaming Trump for this, nope!! Not directly anyways, but these are attracted to his camp whenever they do this crap, they somehow cite Trump.
Black lives matter and other folks need to reboot and come with new and better strategies.

How does that change that he was a white supremacist that killed two people that were defending Muslim women he was harassing? If you click OP's link, you see more recent FB posts showing that he's no longer anti-Trump so...

Not true. He has a post saying that 'If Donald Trump is the next Hitler...".
The evidence shows he was a Bernie supporter and we know that much of the violence during the election came from Bernie supporters. There is a fascist element within that group and this was an escalation of that violence.

Who he supported does not change the fact he was an ass hole, but it highlights a problem area of society - the far left - who are the real people embracing fascism.

He was certainly full of hate - agreed. I think where it matters is in trying to understand what has happened on the far left to lead to the type of fascist behaviour we have been seeing... it needs to be understood in order to try and dial back some of the hate.

There is so much hate demonstrated on a regular basis amongst the far-left that it is not surprising to me that it is escalating into lunatic individuals killing people. The source of much of this lunacy - the far-left - has to addressed.
