If they were being disrespectful or not is not the point. I personally wouldn't do the same.

Then what is the point?

I don't know if you are late to this discussion but the point is:
Do they have the right to free speech? People here don't seem to think so. Some even go as far to suggest punishments for them exercising their right.

Yet another LIE.

You're actually denying that you suggested punishments for them? Wow.

An hypothetical: would it be "disrespectful" if MLK walked out on George Wallace's speech?

I think MLK was busy plagiarizing his Doctoral thesis at Boston Univ at the time.

No, respect is earned but the problem is these kids don't respect themselves or those that came to celebrate their achievements.

So you expect them to respect someone who they have never met. How did he earn their respect?

Them not respecting themselves is just your opinion.

Those that attended to celebrate their achievements are their peers so maybe their peers owe them the same amount of respect and be fine with them standing up and leaving.

Do you know what the word "hypothetical" means?

Yet another LIE. I never said they didn't have the right.

When you lie multiple times that makes you a LIAR.

You did propose a punishment and if an action is punishable then it isn't a right.

Yes, mom and dad paid their way and they need to show their kids respect.

Again it is a right to walk down the street in Harlem with a sign that says "I hate black people".

There would be punishment for that.

This is becoming dangerously close to being a mud-pit thread. I don't want this thread to be suspended or closed. This thread has been good so far despite the mod closing it two times temporarily.

You made a vague statement about respect being earned. I was just pointing out that that would probably not be the case of these students and Pence so you couldn't mean that.

ETA: You have no idea where mom and dad stand on this so why assume? Besides, I said their peers. The other students not their parents or those of their peers.

Yes, how does that change the punishment you proposed for these students?

Yes my words. That was in response to someone else. I said (some) people. And the students DID exercise their right. I never said you said they don't have the right. You never uttered such thing in this thread.

Yes I did. You think they are being disrespectful and should not protest but just sit and be quiet and grin and bear it and listen to a man that actively try to deny rights to minorities.
I know you support their right to free speech and protest. Or at least I hope so.

But you told me that was not the point.

Make up your mind.

Um he wants to force his morality on them. He wants them to shut up and sit. That to me suggests that he doesn't want them to exercise their right to free speech and protest.
