Police in Tbilisi, Georgia, are investigating the death of the country's prime minister. He either died by accident in a friend's apartment, as the
government said, or political opponents had him killed, as several friends said Thursday.
The victim: Zurab Zhvania, 41, a one-time ally of ex-President Eduard Shevardnadze.
The scene: Apartment of Zhvania's friend Raul Usupov, the deputy governor of the Kremo-Kartli region. Zhvania was found slumped in a chair, a
backgammon board in front of him. Usupov was found dead on the kitchen floor.
Preliminary findings: A faulty space heater, the Interior Ministry said, caused the deaths. Interior Minister Vano Merabishvili said security guards
had been unable to contact Zhvania for several hours Wednesday night. Around 4 a.m. Thursday, they went to the apartment where Zhvania had gone
earlier. They broke through a window to find the pair.
