An official report confirms that the death of a Japanese citizen was caused by mad cow disease. The brain wasting disease is thought to come from
eating beef infected by BSE prions. The man lived in the United Kingdom for a month and it is thought he may have become infected there. This is the
first confirmed case of mad cow disease in the Asian nation.

The confirmation comes hours after the Health Ministry said that a Japanese citizen was suspected of having the human variant of mad cow disease. Officials were holding an emergency meeting to determine whether it was caused by eating infected beef.
The ministry told reporters that the patient was a male and had lived for a month in Britain, where mad cow first surfaced in the late 1980s. He developed the disease in December 2001 when he was in his 40s. He died in December.

If the man did contract the disease years ago in Britain then it is probably not an indication of a new outbreak. The disease is a scary one though and all precautions need to be taken to regulate the feed of cows and testing of beef that enters the human food market.

'Mad Cow' and other prion diseases are a world wide problem, but particularly in the USA. Prion diseases are caused by infectious proteins and come in many different strains. Just 4-6 strains are recognized officially, and only in the later stages when the brain is directly infected.
Many scientists believe "subclinical" prion infections are common, and underlie epidemic rising rates of heart disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and various chronic disabilities. This information has been censored systematically to prevent people learning about the extent and nature of the diseases, presumably to 'prevent panic.'
The 'Mad Cow' censorship leaves ordinary people ignorant, and unprepared to deal with the predictable consequences - high medical bills, early physical or mental disabilities and often, bankruptcy.
