Hello ATS Members, my name is James Strength im 27 I live in Florida and I've been a long time lurker, probably 6+ years and I'm interested in many different topics. One that is intimately important to me is out of body travel, and Astral Projection.I have experienced this on many different occasions and every single time, it was involuntary and frightening. One occation which stands out was an afternoon before work during a quick nap.I had laid down for a few minutes on the couch facing the back and my wife was across the room in our recliner holding our newborn. After a few minutes I began to have trouble breathing, like a tightness in my lungs.I tried to roll over and wave to my wife but my arms felt too heavy to move.Suddenly I felt myself rolling off the couch and suddenly I was standing up looking at my wife and myself.I was laying on the couch asleep and my wife was on the phone.I wandered around a bit confused and scared, but strangely hazed and then boom I'm awake again and I feel like crap! The rest of the day at work, I constantly bumped into stuff because I was uncoordinated and lethargic.I was visibly pale and my bosses actually brought me into the office to see if I was drunk or high lol.
This is the biggest experience I have had, besides sleep paralysis and falling asleep but still aware of everything around me.If anyone has any experience with this or can give me tips I would love some feed back.I have read on forums about psycadellics protentiating this and am thinking of trying some.My father has a strange form of psychic ability, where he dreams about snakes and the next day the dream will come true but it's always bad, more on that in a different post. But I think I may have some form of ability to leave my body and I really want to control it instead of it just happening, because it's unsettling and ruins my day when it does happen.
Thank you everyone and I hope someone out there has some insight !!

I don't have a lot of insight into these subjects but I do have a ton of interest and curiosity about em. I've gone my whole life without experiencing this kinda stuff, until the last few months. I used to be skeptical but now I know first hand there's something more to this life than just the material and physical.

Glad you're here and look forward to hearing more about your experiences. ATS is a great place for people to share and collaborate. Maybe someday we'll put all the pieces together and figure out some of life's great mysteries.

High there,

lucid dreaming might be a good start for your research. Also, I'd suggest you try the T McKenna modus operandi with regards to psychoactive substances. Just to make sure you're save to explore the inner universe while avoiding the pitfalls of stupidity. Been there, done that. Should have done the smart thing with "set & setting" instead.

Anyway. Have a great ride and enjoy your stay!

Hi and Welcome,

When a similar thing first happened to me, I started looking for material to read and found a book series by Robert Monroe. I found it to be a very interesting read and the more I read, the more experiences I started having. I agree with PublicOpinion 's statement above that Lucid Dreaming and OOBEs are related. Another good start idea would be to start a dream journal. Every time you wake up, try and remember as many details as you can about your dreams and write them down. It will kick off an awareness in you that in return will spawn more vivid and lucid dreams.

While an OOBE is a different thing, I feel like in both cases you move into different dimensions where it is easy to create with your mind. With OOBE's though, they seem to overlap our reality as if you are a ghost.

Thank you everyone for your welcome and your responses! I have heard of the Monroe Institute before and I have been very excited to learn more about him and McKenna. Both of their view seem to be about linked in that out of body travel can be a possibility, but they use different modus operandi of achiving that goal.Anyway you guys are awesome and after my account is unlocked I will start a thread on Metaphysics and hopefully explore it further.

Hi James welcome to ATS
I am also interested in astral+OBE but have not been able to voluntarily project.I am an abductee -idk if you believe in all that but i wonder if i don't have a subconscious fear or worry about discorporating because of all the strange experiences i've had since childhood, paranormal /metaphysical type stuff.I know i've been out involuntarily, and once i was Dragged out of the body.

That was rather terrifying,it happened more than 20 years ago but i still remember well.Again, being an abductee it muddies the waters in that respect.I remember being out when i was a child, standing a distance behind a steel operating table thing with what looked like doctors in scrubs standing around me working on me and i was thinking "Please put me back into my body" I woke up weeping but helluva relieved to be "back" Also other episodes, back then and in recent times.

So ya i may have this subconscious fear of being out.I have had all my life till a few years ago this "involuntary remote viewing" ability but that is gone now.Lots of mixed feelings i have on this subject.

Hi Jamesstrength,
I'm a new member here too. I'm 46 and have had OBEs from I was a young child along with my twin brother.
My eldest daughter also suffers sleep paralysis like myself. She hates it all.

In my teens I was hell bent on learning everything I could about the OBEs, books galore. But it was Robert Monroe's books that helped me the most. I learned to control them in my teens.

Had some amazing experiences but some bad ones that made me try to stop. That was difficult, trying to stop.
It's those spontaneous OBEs when the sleep paralysis comes on.

trying to turn around in bed but instead I roll out of the body. Still happens and I still get scared!

Hope to discuss more about it at some point.

Hello! I am also new to the site. I have experienced several OBE's, Prophetic Dreams, Lucid Dreams, etc. I am unsure as to the true nature of these experiences, although I can offer one side of the story regarding OBE's.

According to a 2002 study published in Nature, it is possible to induce OBE's by electrical stimulation of the brain's right angular gyrus. However, I do not understand how this explanation can account for the ability of some people experiencing OBE's to obtain information that would otherwise be impossible to obtain. I think that there is still much to be explored in this area, and the neurological connection is but a tiny point in an enormous graph representing the true explanation.

Take care.
