the privacy policy says they only collect data on people who register. You do not have to register to see info. Supposedly this info is only kept for a short period of time.

Walk me through the registration process.

I'm trying to be nice here.

Visiting the site IS the registration process Mulder. Do you see an option anywhere to sign up?

There are no ads and no donation buttons. How do you think they make money?

Hmmm so if that's the case then that would mean anyone can register you by searching your name? So then it would be a good idea to remove your records?

This makes it even worse haha

They don't do Canadians?

They demand American addresses for the search ("you must include the state"), so that seems to limit their scope.

By removing your records, you are VERIFYING that the information they just collected from your computer belongs to you.

Try removing someone else's records now.

It appears to be a purely American site.

I was surprised at how many Fox Mulder's it found.

Hmm Ok, I follow but answer me a question. If that is the case then how come after you remove your records, if you search yourself again, it will come up empty? Same goes for others that have removed themselves. Search them and now it is empty.

Edit: Ok i will try someone elses and see what happens.

Okay I just had to see for myself.

When you click on the link to remove a record, the first thing it prompts you to do is check the box agreeing to the terms and then check the captcha box to verify that you aren't a robot.

That is the registration process.

When you click "begin", you just gave them permission to store your IP address and a whole lot of other stuff (perhaps even your browsing history). You then enter your name and state and it pulls up a list of possible matches. Then you tell them exactly which one is you.

When you affirm that you want to remove that record, it removes it alright... from the front-end of the site. But they still have that record in their database... along with your IP address and browsing history that you just gave them.

They then sell that information to advertisers and God knows who else.

Yea if you read through their long and boring terms and conditions it pretty much states that they use info for advertisers and third parties. The thing is that after you hit begin their is another step you have to do. They are counting on people not following through all the way on removing the records and by making the process of removing your records not obvious. I mean who would think to click that little pale privacy link at the bottom of the screen? Then the extra step of searching yourself AGAIN and then click remove record. It does state in the terms that if you remove your records it really does take them all the way out of the database.

I'm not really worried about the advertisers. Amazon already knows everything about me anyway. At least with this I know some random person wont look me up on this website and get my address and phone number.

It certainly had quite a bit of erroneous and outdated information. Regardless, sent the request to have it removed.

Thanks for the heads up!
