Comey writes a damning memo to himself and only he can read it.

It was circulated. How else would its existence be known, Einstein?

Apparently the memo is with several people, including outside the FBI... but the NYT can't find a copy. Odd.
I think there are potentially three things going on here:
1) there is no memo
2) there is a memo but there is coordination behind the scenes on when to release to have the biggest effect - possibly casting doubt on it's existence and then producing it...
3) Comey never thought there was any reason to believe Trump was trying to tell him to stop the investigation in the context of the conversation he had, and he needs to be worked with prior to any release to make sure he can position the full context of the conversation/what he wrote to try to explain any other sections of the memo that might undermine the narrative.

Why... The New York Times!

That bastion of truth that apologized to it's readers after the 2016 election and the truth came out (through leaked emails!) that they were actively helping Hillary's campaign!

Apparently not circulated to his Deputy FBI Director (odd, that)... we have been told by anonymous sources that it has been circulated widely, though, including to people outside the FBI...would have thought it would be easy for the NYT to get a copy.

Yes, and the thing isn't classified!

Why is it so hard to lay fingers on it?
They had someone read it to them.. apparently over the phone?

Your speculation that it is being withheld for dramatic effect is probably close to the mark.

Someone read it to Fake Crapper at CNN over the phone too...
Seems really odd.

Just hearing that the reason Trump cleared the room to speak with Comey only was to discuss the leaks and ask what Comey was doing about it. It would make sense to clear the room for that topic. One of the parts of that private conversation, Trump's question on whether reporters could be punished for publishing leaked information, has made it's way to the media too, so we know that Comey himself was leaking information. I am not sure what the classification status is of private conversations with the President (will need to find out).

The conversation about Flynn was not the purpose of the conversation but came up... that provides some more context.

Doesn't matter anyways. What Trump supposedly said in the article in no way indicates that he was calling for Comey to end the investigation.

Agreed. It's not going to fly in terms of impeachment, but politically it could be damaging. I think that is the point of it...

(AP) May 14, 2014: Pedestrians wait for cabs across the street from The New York Times in New York. (AP) The publisher of The New York Times penned a letter to readers Friday promising that the paper would “reflect” on its coverage of this year’s election while rededicating itself to reporting on “America and the world” honestly. Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr., the paper’s embattled publisher, appealed to Times readers for their continued support. “We cannot deliver the independent, original journalism for which we are known without the loyalty of our subscribers,” the letter states. Letter to NYT readers from Arthur Sulzberger Jr. and Dean Baquet pic.twitter.com/jORqzx3BA9 — Sydney Ember (@melbournecoal) November 11, 2016 New York Post columnist and former Times reporter Michael Goodwin wrote, "because it [The Times] demonized Trump from start to finish, it failed to realize he was onto something. And because the paper decided that Trump’s supporters were a rabble of racist rednecks and homophobes, it didn’t have a clue about what was happening in the lives of the Americans who elected the new president." Sulzberger's letter was released after the paper’s public editor, Liz Spayd, took the paper to task for its election coverage. She pointed out how its polling feature Upshot gave Hillary Clinton an 84 percent chance as voters went to the polls. She compared stories that the paper ran about President-elect Donald Trump and Clinton, where the paper made Clinton look functional and organized and the Trump campaign discombobulated.

I added the color.
The editor responded with this:

Why would Trump ask Comey to stop an investigation the DAY AFTER Flynn resigned? It makes no sense.

I'd love to see that memo.

"I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.", Trump said.

Though Trump could only mention his hopes and dreams as he bit into his over-cooked steak, I knew deep down he was telling me to end the investigation into Flynn

Yup.

Sadly, the document will never turn-up, the anonymous sources never revealed; yet the minions will believe the BS press.

Never thought I would see the day that Gossip turned to Gospel.
