The RUssians continue to plug away at their T-50/PAK-FA program to produce a next generation, possibly stealth fighter. The program has been much delayed and appears will be further delayed still: the Russians are now talking about deliveries taking place circa 2020. However, despite the sanctions and low oil price, they have continued to work. The Russians just unveiled the latest prototype with a new, digital camo pattern:

In addition, the Russians have been claiming the next gen engine for the PAK-FA is about ready:

(yet has not still flown…remember, this is the Russians. it may be some time before it does.)

The Russians are also claiming the PAK-FA will carry anti ship missiles as well. If this is the case the PAK-FA will have become a multirole fighter rather than an air superiority bird:

As for how long this program is taking vs the press releases, keep in mind, Russian, despite its size and population, only has an economy equal to Canada's. And, the price of oil dropped out from under them after they launched the modernization programs. The root cause of that is the opening up of new supplies at lower costs. This was mainly done through new technology. However, as a result, the price of oil will not recover to the $100/barrel range for at least 20 years. For better or worse. That, in turn, means the Russians won't be rearming very fast. Whatever they may wish.

That said, the 6th gen ought to be aimed at the Chinese, not Russians.

External missile pod?

It's a nice looking plane. But how stealthy is that thing?

Just mission specific ala F-35/F-22.

We should bare in mind this is just a prototype, much like the early F-22 development and test vehicles. It doesn't even have the new engines and exhaust arrangement. However I'm betting that this thing will be closer to the F-15 SE/Silent Eagle and F/A-18 ASH level in terms of stealth. Good but not in the league of the Raptor or F-35 (at least its frontal aspect). However that may be all they need anyway. I cant see them getting involved in too many first order conflicts with the likes of the US or China, so this may end up sufficing.

It's a LO platform. The Russians sacrificed stealth for maneuverability. They knew if they were to go for both, they would never have had the money or time to get it in the air, on the market and customers that could afford them. If it wasn't for Indian funding, this wouldn't have made it past the prototype stage.

The Russians are now saying first production deliveries are to be in 2019.
