The tech to stop nuclear weapons is there. Just because it's not perfected doesn't mean it's not there. No weapon is unstoppable, not even nuclear weapons or rail guns.

Yes, stopping a hypersonic weapon is harder. That's sort of the entire point of them. The key word there is harder though. Not impossible, simply harder.

What technology can stop a nuclear weapon in any meaningful manner through?

Missile defense and anti missile, missiles are all well and good but once those warheads are on the way back down they are also traveling at hypersonic velocity and very hard to intercept.

Might get away will lasing the warhead but focusing and maintaining the beam for the required amount of time to damage or disable the device would indeed be near on impossible.

Particle beams apparently pack more punch but just as with lasers atmospheric conditions and the ability to focus the beam on target and maintain it there also play there part.

I mean i get where you are coming from, for every offensive technology we develop, someone somewhere will also develop a defense or defensive measures.

But against these type of new hyper sonic systems there aircraft carriers would present no more of a problem than shooting fish in a barrel so why build 10 very large easily interceptable targets?

Ok sure. We'll just go with nukes and super advanced weapons, and stop building expensive targets for unstoppable weapons.

That would not work nether considering these nukes and super advanced weapons also constitute rather expensive targets .

What we should do is decide to find less new and interesting means of destroying one another's toys and use the technologies and resources we pump into our military industrial complex to address some of the larger issues humanity faces as a species.

Carriers are obsolete against high technology missiles and attack submarines.

But they are very very veyr useful for intimidation and land attack against not as advanced neighbors.

Battleships, Zerstorer types and turreted fighters were all the rage world wide throughout the late 30's, but it didn't mean it was a great investment in resources when push came to shove.

Neither carriers or stealth are "obsolete" or useless, but the former is a masive divestment of resources for limited return against a near-peer. The latter represents a large divestment of resources that is of limited utility except against near-peer.

There's a discussion to be had about the cost-benefit equation.

Its strange that Lockheed had plans for Stealth Naval ships back in the day..Navy did its usual magic and it all came to nought.

This signals the next (third) carrier isn't nuclear.
