Can you explain how it works?

I've never really paid that much attention to all this. Until now.

With profit based healthcare, physicians are free to choose where they set up clinics and charge what they like, based on what the local market can afford.
They will of course avoid the poorest neighborhoods. But they will have the latest medical equipment that may or may not provide real benefits. So you will end up with major cities having thousands of doctors and dentists while rural areas have no local services.

With public healthcare, the health department analyzes demographics and chooses where to build new hospitals based on future pooulation growth. Doctors and nurses are on fixed national payscales but the advantage is that they can easily move around. In some cases, the private sector can be allowed to treat patients provided they accept pre-agreed prices. Medical equipment might not always be the latest models eg. MRI scanners as the technology is constantly being updated to justify the high price. The health department will move people around as necessary.

what other industries are "wrong" to make profits?

There is making a profit, and then there is making mobster-level profits. Are you suggesting that medical care is fair for what you receive? If they can't regulate it, then replacing it with a system that doesn't try to charge 300% + more than the care you actually receive doesn't seem a bad idea.

Government got involved and made healthcare worse, in the US.

Was is great before?

It was better before government got involved, in my opinion.

It was rated near-worst well before Obamacare, it's been terrible for a long while now. We have consistently one of the worst-rated healthcare systems on the planet. Capitalism is all well and good, but greed managing the health of a nation's people never ends well.
