Advocates claim about 3% administration costs but that would have to be a streamlined system with just basic coverages.

Except in countries like China and North Korea where health care costs a tenth of what it does in the US.

Or if we ran a basic health care system like North Korea operates the hair styling industry (women get a choice of 5 approved haircuts).

As soon as you start to underwrite detailed line items like the age men can have the government pay for their Viagra refills health care gets expensive. Generates all kinds of different special interests, profit motives and expensive lawsuits.

Single payer doesn't mean you don't get doctors. Limits on refills...it would be price, but the cheapest because everyone is helping pay for your Viagra, and Betty's car crash would be the cheapest because EVERYONE is helping pay for Betty, and etc. You will have a premium, and your Viagra will cost the same as everyone else, and if you buy too much Viagra, than you're simply the one responsible for raising the previously low Viagra premium.

No, EVERYONE won't pay...those of us with legitimate incomes will foot the bill for all the bangers shot gunfighting in the streets, dealing drugs on the corners, or generally causing mayhem and getting hurt, as well as the rest of US society that chooses not to work and sponge off of others...THEY won't pay a thing...ever...

You're also paying for other people's police and fire emergencies and other people's broken roads getting fixed. Get over it.

That's called state taxes....police, fire and roads are something needed unless we go back back to wild west law, which I am in favor of by the way. Health care is a totally different beast....i can't make you not have kids because you can't afford them, I can't make you eat healthy foods to avoid health risks, I can't make you stop smoking because you'll get cancer.

I don't mind paying for our police and fire and roads. Unless I have a say in how how you live and your lifestyle, I don't want to have to pay for the repercussions of your poor decisions....you choose to have 5 kids making 25k a year....deal with it....you choose to smoke and get cancer...deal with it....you choose to eat McDonald's and have a heart attack at 40...deal with it.....you are not my responsibility.

I have 3 kids I have to raise right...i don't need people who are of age to be adults yet make 9 year old decisions on my payroll...if you don't contribute then fall then fall to the side and disappear....i promise nobody will miss you.

What a load of hogwash,

Competition doesn't work because what we have is nowhere near a free market.

Hospitals protection via CON, no enforcement of any consumer, anti-competitive, anti-monopolistic or anti-collusion laws. Each state requiring separate insurance boards, networks and rules. AMA coding copyrights, managed care groups owned by same hospitals with CON protected territories. Labs owned by doctors groups. etc. etc. etc.

Ya that's a free market not!!!

It's a market where pricing is as high as the market will bear, sometimes more.

Insurance companies love it when you realize 10% of a hundred million is chump change compared to getting 10% return on a trillion.

It an unholy alliance is what it is.

For seventeen pages I have noticed something rather odd.

Hardly anyone is defending the ACA.

They all want something else.

My insurance company has never not paid my hospital bills.

So you can try to tell me I was 'scammed'.

I KNOW better.

How much have you paid in insurance premiums over your lifetime?

How much have your hospital bills been?

Either your bills are less than your premiums in which case, thanks to the health insurance industry you have had to pay more.

Or, your bills are more than your premiums and you're actually a welfare recipient having been propped up by others.

You're one or the other. A fool who bought into a scam, or someone who couldn't cover their own bills.

Those in favor of a single payer, who exactly do you think is going to be paying for that?
Do you think it would be "free"?
Those of us who are working would be paying for it, via a drastic increase in taxes. We would be paying for everyone who is not working.

I will wait to see what comes out of Senate before celebrating, but this seems like a good first step today.

This poster (from around 1938) reads: "60,000 Reichsmark is what this person suffering from a hereditary defect costs the People's community during his lifetime. Fellow citizen, that is your money too."

Did that poster also mention what this person contributed to society or anything?

I mean even Stephen Hawking contribute and he can't do a damn thing on his own....

No, more like comparing with people who continue to smoke, eat like pigs the most non-nutritional food availabe, drink alcohol, then get cancer, diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver, etc., and then expect the healthy living folks to pick up their healthcare tab...that would seem to be a more accurate comparison. And if they didn't have insurance before they developed those self-induced conditions, they're considered pre-existing (as in before being insured)...far as I'm concerned, those that participate in behaviors that science has proven unhealthy (or even deadly) deserve what they get - and I shouldn't have to pick up the tab...nor should anyone else not involved in those folk's self-indulgent behaviors.

It sounds to me like you're the one who wants to meddle in others lives. If you don't approve of how they live, you want to cut them out of services.

We know what happened after 1938.

The Jews got 'free' healthcare.

So because the man in the poster didn't have the advantage of technology that Stephen Hawking had, it was okay to kill him?

The same people who pay for our overseas military bases, pay for our constant wars/military interventions/covert operations, pay for billions of dollars worth of subsidies to corporations, etc. So why is it ok for us to line the pockets of defense contractors & multinational corporations with taxpayer funds, but it's only a problem when we want to use that money to save actual American lives instead?

Sure looks that way.

That must be why the straight line party vote to oppose it's repeal.

They don't even want it, and yet they still want to force it on us.

honest question why pay for anything?

honest question why do you have so little respect for doctors that you expect them to work for free?

I didn't say doctors had to work for free. I said, why should the cost for doctors come only from the pockets of the sick? Health care is not a good where you can buy more when you have more disposable income and less when you don't. It's a fixed amount for every single person, otherwise you die. Why should such a cost be shouldered only by those in their time of need rather than by society in general?

Perfect unifying response and reason for a nationwide tax halt.

We should all go and change our W-4's.

aazadan just asked why anyone should pay

what other industries do you propose the govt take over?

do you propose doctors still have to attend school for 6+ years?
who is going to pay for their school?
who would still want to be a dr?

The government runs schools, teachers still get paid.
