Really? That hairstyle's actually considered a traditional feminine style there. To my knowledge they've worn "cornrows" in Ethiopia for centuries, maybe even millenia. Some of the Ethiopian guys I've met even laughed at our "thug culture" where some guys here wear/wore them. (I had cornrows when I was in high school though I didn't mention that lol.)
