Socialism is achievable in the US. And don't tell me it can't be done.

But, but, but, if you do that then not everyone is equal.

I'm not of the SJW variety, so you're really barking up the wrong tree with that one. I happen to understand that we are by no means created equally. That's another myth that was branded into our brains at an early age and has no basis in reality.

You are offering some more and better for doing harder, nastier, less appealing work ... sort of like in a capitalist economy.

Sort of, but not quite. In America the guy pumping crap from a port-a-john will never make much as the hot chick who shows people houses all day.

And you end up creating haves and have nots.

Currently our "have nots" literally have not. I'd like to change that.

I would prefer that we keep our constitution, get the moneyed interests out of politics and return to democracy.

I've been hearing that my whole life, when are we actually going to do it?

Here let me help you out... NEVER.

We just elected a Republican majority to lead this country and they can't even repeal Obamacare because the insurance companies WON'T LET THEM...

at least not without another multi-billion dollar bailout.

Yeah well others in the past claimed to have a bleeding heart for the have nots as well. Take Mao for example, all he did was murder millions of China's educated and elite, and then just replaced them with mindless peons and a new ruling group of assholes.

It's never going to change, do you know why? Because human beings are greedy, we always want more whether you admit it or not, it is what it is.

So you really never solve anything, you just take from others, and in some cases commit murder, only to end up back where you started. Same thing happened after the Bolsheviks toppled the Tzar.

What do you have in Russia and China right now after both of their very bloody Socialist revolutions? You have two closet capitalist governments who are robbing their treasuries, and ruling over the peasants much more brutally than the former ruling evil rich people did before them. It's called a circle jerk. ~$heopleNation

You mean SOME human beings are greedy and always want more. The problem is we let them have control.

No. ALL human beings are.

If you look at what someone else has that you don't and you think you should have it and covet it, then you are greedy. Period. Stop. End of sentence.

It doesn't matter how much they have or how much you have. If doesn't matter for what reasons you're telling yourself you're taking from them, the motivating factor is, in the end, greed.

In socialism everyone works for society for the benefit of society. Everyone works for everyone else. That's why it's call socialism which is derived from the word society. As opposed to working only for the profit of oneself.

It only works when everyone has skills to offer. It completely breaks down when one group is incapable or unwilling to work for ideological reasons.

Hafez Assad was put into power by the USSR. Baathism was backed by the USSR. Baathism is socialism. In Syria housing is free, healthcare is free, education is free. They get solar power for free. In the US it costs money to build solar power. In Syria it's all done for free.

Free stuff YEAH! Wait, what? Does that mean I would need to actually live in Syria? I heard the chemicals are free too...

I live in Canada where healthcare is free. I was in line to get my health card renewed the other day and it took hours of waiting in line. That's how bad socialist service is. Yeah it's slow. It's free, but the quality of service is crap.

My point is, socialism is achievable. As for the service, that's another story. Just compare public schools with private schools. Where do rich people send their kids? It's a no brainer.

I think people are confusing socialism with socialist principles.

Nope, It's exactly what I said, human nature is to dominate, to struggle and want more, to be greedy. Sure maybe some monk somewhere fights those desires, or there are always exceptions to any rule, yet it's always there.

This concerns socialists wanting to take from others and spread the wealth, its greed like another pointed out. Or it could also mean that those same new Socialist rulers themselves become what they supposedly despised, by accumulating mass wealth for themselves.

This is the way of the World, power and politics. Most people who detest rich people, are hypocrites who have been brainwashed by swindlers who use their predicament in order to become the very same thing. ~$heopleNation

Socialism does not work because it requires more and more government control. The control never ends until your reach complete totalitarianism then society breakdown ensues.

I think you mixed up public and private schools. Otherwise your post makes sense.

I'm in the UK where public schools are where you pay fees to attend.

Our taxpayers/govt funded schools are called state schools.

It took me a while to click on this thread- when I see the title, I say to myself, "wow, talk about stirring the pot!"

To post that in a forum with so many Americans, who confuse socialism and communism, and who tend to think in black and white terms like their two party system (it's all or nothing...) this is extremely provocative!

No, Socialism would never work in the US. The deep set values would take hundreds of years to evolve enough to make it even slightly possible. Plus, I personally don't think the all or nothing approach is rational or ever efficient.

The countries which are able to work with socialist principles are ones that are very careful to constantly keep a balancing level of capitalism with it. They are countries that have a deep value system of interdependence, which makes the social mores adaptable. I see in France that what I would call the Socialist element is not so much the governing or economic system as it is the social practices and unofficial mores and values.

It is the sentiment that a nation is an entity of interdependent members- that the choices of the individual impact the whole. It is the sense that one is not an island. This basic world view is just something that goes against our individualist views as americans in such a way that it cannot be changed overnight.

Hell, I've been here for more than twenty years, and cannot escape my individualist values even when I see they are not logical and try to change them! -And I'm all alone, with no one in my entourage to support and encourage them. You'd think I would have succumbed to the environment by now!

Instead, I'm doing like Ayn Rand did, exteriorizing the inner conflict by defending the mores of my host country against those of my native one. But as soon as I acknowledge I am doing that, I lose all emotional steam behind it.
It's not better, it's different. Like anything else (including capitalism) it gets very bad when it gets to an extreme and is not counter balanced.

Every once in a while someone posts that stupid story about the classroom experiment and what would happen if everyone was given the same grade - it so warped and wrong, and yet people who have never lived within a socialist influenced country rally to it with an Amen as if it is unquestionable.

It describes the behavior of people in an individualist society suddenly faced with solidarity, and how they would react. It describes how Americans would react in such a situation. It is far from what happens in a classroom of kid brought up with this sense of interdependence.

Again, so, no, I don't think any bit of socialist principles could possibly work in the US at this time. It would be a catastrophy. The people would have to spend a few generations teaching their kids that they are not alone in their bubbles, then they'd have to take back control of their government through a revolution, so that it could be a government of the people- and they could treat it like a servant of the people, rather than the other way around.

Right now, their military and their government had been fed and stroked like a fat cat so that the people are like scared elderly parents afraid to talk back to their forty year old obese, 7 foot tall, and tyrannical son living on their living room couch.

I don't know what the answer is to this problem (or if there is one). But giving that narcissistic tyrant your money and trusting he'll be responsible with it is not a wise option at this point.

The issue isn't even really with implementing socialism today. The issue is with what happens 10 or 20 years down the line as society is collapsing in on itself.

Sure, you can implement socialism, but why would you want to? Wouldn't you rather have a society that still has the capacity to thrive and create? A society that is not only free to dream of bigger and better things, but can turn those dreams into reality?

Socialism is the invention of inbreds, retards, and losers; the only people it benefits are those same inbreds, retards, and losers who find themselves unable to cope with the expectation of getting off their lazy arses and making their own way in the world.

Are you all really that stupid?
