We have had widespread outages across Canada today with Shaw. Internet is down all over the western provinces and some in Ontario. Reports coming in saying people lost phone and tv too.
I live Manitoba but use my company's Vancouver VPN and was unable to do my job today.
They are saying it was a "software failure".
Not sure about this, but reading that Shaw did mass lay-offs in the last couple of days. The problems with internet started for me on Monday.
Could Shaw have been hacked by disgruntled employees?
Or could this have something to do with Trump and NAFTA? (Just the conspiracy theorist coming out in me!)
I guess time will tell.

a software failure during an upgrade to the system,

they must of laid off the people that know how to do a software upgrade without crashing the entire system.

I'm in Thunder Bay Ontario.
We have had an ice storm for the past 2 days. City damn near shut down.
Looks like it's gonna continue on till tomorrow afternoon.
Perhaps this storm has something to do with the outages.

Ha, ha!

Either that, or they laid off people who know how to sabotage the entire system....

We live in Sask and this has been happening off and on for over a month. Called Shaw when it was happening and they said they couldn't see anything wrong. Had the cable guy here less than an hour ago, he switched all the connectors with new ones. I guess we will see if it worked.

Even more worrying than Shaw being down, is that all four major providers were down at the same time. Shaw, Telus, Bell and Rogers were all down.

Now other than Shaw Big Pipe being used by SOME of those services, I'm not sure of anything else connecting the networks other than the internet backbone servers.

Did someone just do a cyber hack against Canada?

This was reported at the same time that Trump was threatening to pull out of NAFTA. Did the Americans shut off all inet access for major providers as a show of force?

What's most interesting is that all four ISPs were out at the same time across large parts of Canada, and it wan't even mentioned in MSM.
