Russia and China will conduct their first ever joint military exercises in August or September to better coordinate the fight against terrorism, the AFX news agency reported, citing an article in the China Daily newspaper.

Russian First Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Belousov confirmed the war games during talks in Beijing, the newspaper said.

“We will hold our first joint command staff exercises with the Chinese army in August or September involving various forces to practice issues involving fighting our common enemy —- international terrorism,” he said.

In December, the Russian news agency Interfax said the exercises would be on Chinese territory and include the army, navy, air force units, and submarines.

Russia and China have had tense relations in the past, with the two sides fighting two brief border wars in the 1950s, but the border dispute was resolved last year when Moscow gave up rights to a few small disputed islands.

Russia remains one of China’s top arms suppliers, with a 15-year-old arms embargo in effect from the European Union.

Russian-Chinese defense cooperation gained momentum in the 1990s after Western nations imposed the embargo following the 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protestors in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square.

Cooperation was cemented in 2000 at a summit meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his then Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin.

russia and china in a joint military exercise?
now that is going to be one BIG military exercise,
considering how many troops does china and russia have,
not to mention how many, if they put them togather.

Army navy and air force conducting joint exercises to confront "international terrorism" ?

Interesting to find out what they mean by "international terrorism"?

Russia already has a terrorist problem and the Chinese also have a Muslim population that they are afraid will become militant. It's not surprising to me at all.

Well, the problem is that I do not see the Russians asking the Chinese to send Chinese troops, aricraft and ships to help on the Russian domestic terrorist problem and vice versa.

Think about it, it's gotta be quite obvious that this joint air, land and sea exercise between these two communist superpowers is to prepare for something really BIG.

Russia is SUPPOSED to be a free country, lol.....still has heavy crutches in communism, still?

Also, it may be a subtle hint to the US, a don't mess with us sign.

Quite frankly, I cannot remember any incidence of the Chinese having joint exercises with any nation. Joint exercises are meant to co-ordinate responses. So, this is a really huge milestone in terms of military co-operation betwen these two (again I say communist) nations. Only thing I can think of is that this will certainly awaken certain quarters as to the real intentions and message being sent.

Both Russia and China border some of the most idealogically fundamentalist territory in the world. It's only natural that they should co-operate. This isn't the first joint exercise either as most of the press would have you believe - both Navies exercised together in '99 and according to the Chinese there were all armed forces exercises in '58. And it also comes as no big suprise as Russia is one of China's main arm suppliers.
The Chinese PLA has also recently gone through a major re-alignment. For decades it has been controlled by Jiang Zemin. It's possible that his relinquishment of power means that the Chinese generals now have the freedom to co-operate with allies which they didn't have before.

It should also be remembered that Russia spends far more time exercising with NATO and Western European countries.

Incidentally, Russia and China may be co-operating militarily, but economically they are still at loggerheads. Not all in the pasture is green.

Sounds like the intro to Red Dawn. Look to the skies for the red star parachutes.

A coalition of those two superpowers should make more than a few countries a little worried. Could they be preparing to help us in Iran or use that as a chance for their own expansion and land grabbing? Can't wait to hear more news on this one.
