He railed about corruption and inequality in economic opportunity.

So what part of $400k speaking fee is someone missing ?

Hello.

Economic inequality.

You are still confused.

Is it your expectation That Pres. Obama refuse money for speaking? The same kinds of money that every President before him got?

Hell..Ronald Reagan got 1 Million for a speech...Trump 1.5 Million for 17 of them over two weeks at an hour a pop.

Now...If Pres. Obama employed some bizzare tax avoidance scheme...like opening a fake charity and having the money deposited there...Or borrowed a billion dollars from other people and then wrote if off as a loss to avoid paying taxes for a decade...THEN we could discuss Corruption and unequal "economic opportunity" between the rich and other people.

But seeing as there is nothing unusual or illegal about this speaking fee and President Obama pays his taxes (made them public)...I'd say he has earned the right to earn a living...It appears YOU are the only one who has issue with the free-market here?

Reagan...1 Mil for a speech...Conservative God?
Trump...1.5 Mil for several idiotic real-estate talks?...Lord Trump?

Pres. Obama gets 400k for a speech?...No way!! Horrible!!

Apart from 600-1.1M less and one of those people being African American, please explain difference that offends you.

My expectation was for Obama to walk his talk.

But that was too much to ask.

Re-read their criticisms. They're not mad that someone's making $400,000 to give a speech; they're mad that Barack Obama is making $400,000 to give a speech. And even worse, they sound outright jealous in their comments ("it's a good gig if you can get it"; "who'd want to pay to hear him?"; "$400,000? I could give better info than him; etc.").

Ironically, I always thought that "envy" was one of the 7 Sins. But I'm not a part of the so called "religious right", so maybe I have them mixed up?

ETA: The last lines about envy aren't directed at you.

Well at least those 'poor gullible students' aren't as clueless or naïve as the ones that paid for Trump University. There's a list of concerts as long as my arm that command ticket prices of $200 and up that I wouldn't go to for free. So I don't see what the point is. And as has been pointed out, every former President does speaking and book tours.

"You mean George Bush sends our soldiers into combat, they are severely wounded, and then he wants $120,000 to make a boring speech to them?" Trump wrote this morning.

The group's chairwoman told ABC News that Bush reduced his fees from $250,000 to $100,000. But Bush's typical speaking fee was reported by Politico at being between $100,000 and $175,000.

Except his "walk" already included helping bailout Wall Street with the 2nd half of the TARP bailouts & bailing out the capitalist auto industry...

When did he ever say anything about not accepting money for providing a service?

When did he say to not accept a fair market compensation for providing a service?

I don't know that he even does, does he?

He pretty much disappeared after he left office...not that it matters. If an ex-president wants to charge money to speak, let him. I don't have to pay, nor listen...

He did, to the tune of several million. I don't know that he still does any engagements of any magnitude, but he was for several years. We just didn't hear any whining about it.

Correct. "Too big to fail" was basically the doctrine they used to bail out and prop up our entire capitalist economy. I just can't understand how people can claim he is anti-capitalist when he literally helped preserve Wall Street & our capitalist system as a whole. And that was all in the first 2 years of his 1st term, so it's not like he slipped that in at the end.

If he was really some kind of commie radical, he would've let it all collapse and then pushed through real socialist & communist programs in the chaos after the collapse. He would've let capitalism die because of the bankers' excessive greed and then used it as an example of why we should abandon that economic model. Instead, he helped bail them out and covered for them, refusing to prosecute them for their crimes.

Good for Barry. 400k though, for anyone, it toooooo much dough. That is a payoff. You are not buying the speaker you are buying the rights to the speaker and use their likeness to promote. Who cares. He did his 8 years.

Should he do it for nothing? For schools, yes. I think speaking fees for colleges and schools is a rip off. Private Industry? to the highest bidder O...to the highest bidder...

Does he? Good for him, too!!

I'd do it, too, if I thought anyone was so foolish as to pay to listen to me ramble on about stuff I know nothing about, and care about even less...

What the Hell, right? Fools and their money...

I know that right now he's painting a lot and sends his art to friends. Some of the stuff I've seen isn't terrible, but he's definitely no Picasso.

Like him or not, he seemed genuinely happy in the interview I caught of him in regards to painting. He was chuckling and poking fun at his own stuff.
