A series of subsequent power outages in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and New York City left commuters stranded and traffic backed up on Friday morning. Although the outages occurred around the same time, there is as of yet no evidence that they were connected by anything more than coincidence.

Power Outages Coincide in LA, New York, and San Francisco

Beyond local Bay Area news for the SF outage this is all I could find in a quick search about these 3 major cities being hit with such a huge power failure today.

SF's outage affected nearly 90,000 PG&E customers.

It's interesting given the recent talk on ATS about possible EMP drills in the coming days in the northeast.

What do you guys think?

I don't think they are connected myself.

What I do think is that it should be a reminder of how much of "our" lives are held together by a fine thread that we have zero control over. Those being electricity, internet connectivity, and for urban to suburban folks, water/sewer. As we have evolved as a free society, that cornerstone has bee given away.

....you asked.

I live in LA, and my part of LA has no power outage.

Three liberal strongholds. Pure mismanagement and incompetence. I see Chicago is missing from the list.

Doesn't Cali experience power outages fairly regularly? Or is that only during the summer months?

There's nothing suspicious here, just a lot of folks without power, which really sucks but I'm sure it'll be up soon enough, if not already.

Not common, but it does happen. About once every 3 - 5 years.

There seems to be a lot of eye brow raising as to the causes of all these outages and not a lot of concrete reasoning.

This is an odd coincidence. Our power grid was mostly built in the 1950's and 60's with an expected 50 year life. This is 2017, expect more failures.

Rolling black outs arent uncommon to conserve energy.

But the heavy load season is still 2 months away...

Times of reported outages? If they arent coincidence, (i.e. hacked) there will be a close correlation in the times.

Three major cities, all at the same time, and we are supposed to believe it's a coincidence?

Not buying that!

Well neither of the cities had absolute complete outages. It was like just small chunks of each city.

Perfect little test or warning from outside. They would not tell us if it was a successful attack.

I guess it is solar storm related.

True, but still, all around the same time? Something bigger would be harder for people to brush off as coincidence.
