Your day-to-day must be dismal.

Sure don't run around screaming the planet is out to get me, and push an asinine technology that depends on the climate to work.

It took centuries to bring the costs down.

So what's to stop the owner/operators from buying they're own self driving truck.... and instead of being away from their homes and families for days or weeks at a time..... from sitting at home and getting paid while the truck does all the work

These are not OTC trucks they are yard trucks to be used around ports or in cities like LA calif where special smog requirement trucks are required.
Trucking companies in the LA area only use these special trucks just long enough to get there loads out to the desert and then regular OTC trucks take the loads across the US.

Other shipping companies are planing on moving there shipping through other wast coast states or mexico and leaving Kalifornia.

Less Trucks on the road.

People out of work.

People that can't afford specialized training.

The list goes on.

There are no silver bullets.

As tech progress's people lose jobs.

A new method to produce H2 not using either methods posted above!

They found that H2 can be produced by supplying ammonia and oxygen at room temperature to a pre-treated RuO2/?-Al2O3 catalyst without external heating. The heat evolves by ammonia adsorption onto this catalyst, increasing it to the catalytic auto-ignition temperature of ammonia. Subsequently, production of H2 by oxidative decomposition of ammonia begins. In this process, once the reaction is initiated, it can start again repeatedly even if there is no external heat supply because adsorbed ammonia is desorbed during the reaction.

They found chemical catalysts that help heat the solution enough to begin the reaction. The reaction gives off nitrogen (N2), an H2O molecule, and lots of H2. That seem too good to be true! One week Toyota announces a hydrogen semi and ten days later a quick and efficient method to produce hydrogen? Hum...

the choice between fuel call and batteries is clear, fuel cells win out every time. batteries, take hours to recharge. recharge them fast and they generate heat, heat is bad for Li-ion batteries.

fuel calls have an advantage that batteries, no matter what type, will never have. the time it takes to replenish. 200 miles and then 5 minutes to replenish to go another 200 miles. batteries, 200 miles and over 30 minutes to go another 200 miles.

batteries have one major disadvantage they have a very limited number of recharge cycles. one thing many people do not know about tesla cars is that the price you pay includes 1 replacement battery pack. the new modle that has yet to hit the road, does not include the replacement battery pack in the price, so when your battery is at the end of its life you have to fork out the cost of the replacement. it's not going to be cheap either.

i'll take fuel cell over battery every time.

Hmmm....I am pretty sure nothing took centuries to bring costs down, but if you have an example I'd love to hear it.

Anywho....we are all going to be long dead before automated trucks share the road on a regular basis. For automated cars to happen there would have to be legislation that would make it illegal to manually drive a car. Hopefully I don't have to explain why.
