Just wanted to share something. Something I should have started years ago, but at least I figured it out.

This week I celebrated a birthday. I got older.

Instead of suggesting gifts or gift ideas or hints or figuring out what to get, I did something else this year.

I bought everyone else presents for my birthday instead.

Took my sons out and treated them, got surprise gifts for my wife.

Best damned day I have had for a long time. Hell, I have everything I want.

I loved it. I celebrated the day of my birth by giving everyone else presents. Weird?

Maybe.

Or maybe it's common and I'm just too slow to have caught on until now.

Anyway, it was a great day and something I really suggest people try.

That is all.

That's good, i'm happy for you and yours.
It would be nice if more people had your generous sensibilities.

Ready for my birthday hack?

Tell them it's your birthday everywhere you go, all the time. Chances are you'll rake in a few free desserts or iced mochas along the way

I know, you made a deal with some retail association to promote more gifts being bought. You will now be getting all sort of free gift certificates in the mail from many businesses around the country.

Happy birthday!

What a wonderful idea. Giving presents always feels better than receiving one ( except when it's me getting the gift.)

Glad you had a nice day.

That's the way to do it man! For me personally i always feel good when I help other people out. I help people not because they deserve it or need it, just because that's what makes me feel good. Kind of selfish I guess. To do good things to others. (Because it's really all about making my own heart happy and has nothing to do with them).

It is a beautiful gesture, from someone who feels blessed.
The joy you share with the receivers of those gifts, will never be forgotten.
That is how one shows the world, that there is true happiness in sharing our blessings with others.
At least for one day in your life: you have earned the titles of "World's most awesome Dad and Husband"!

I used to work in Dallas, Texas, for a government contractor, and there were a lot of people from India there. On their birthdays, they brought in treats and gifts for everybody else. I was told that was their tradition, to give to others as a symbol of gratefulness that they were born into a world with friends and family.

I thought it was a beautiful, lovely, non-selfish tradition.

It really is better to give than receive.

Happy Birthday.

I have a friend that lost all of her family. Her mother and father past quite a while back, but she lost her only sibling a few months ago.

That is what she did on her birthday. She gave herself a small birthday party and she gave all of her friends gifts.

She said she was feeling down because she thought she didn't have any family left, then she remembered that she had friends that she loved, and was as close to her as family, and she wanted to celebrate the wonderful gift she had in us as true friends.

It was the most beautiful birthday party I had ever attended.

Happy Birthday!

Will you adopt me? my father died a long time ago and I really need a great person like you in my family. Your family is truly blessed by your kind spirit.

As my family is somewhat apart and distanced, on our birthdays, my daughter and I find the homeless and try to buy them a meal and lotions-pillows-coats-blankets-medicines, some comforts. We really don't tell family or many friends because we have received much criticism but even though we have little to offer-we feel a wee bit better knowing it may bring some comfort for those suffering. And it does remind us to be grateful for the little we have.
