I had to eat that when I was young, my dad used to buy it by the tub. I ate a little, but did not care for it much, I avoided the kitchen when he took it out of the fridge. I do like pickled herring though.

Who eats that stuff? People who were likely on the cusp of starving and needed to eat whatever they could. Then the foods just sort of stayed in the culture once they were embedded there.

The ones that get me are the foods that are deadly poisonous unless prepared a certain way, and some of the preparations are very elaborate and particular. That makes you wonder how desperate people had to be to eat to keep tinkering with something until it finally didn't kill someone.

Id try to eat moss and dirt before Id think to eat a rotten fish or embryonic fowl.
