I noticed a post can be edited immediately after it's been done.
But I can't return to an older post to edit.
Is this something new?

Some forums have a limit of 24 hours to edit a post, some one week. I am unsure of how long it is for ATS.

After two hours you can no longer edit.
New? about 2 or 3 months old.

Rules change a little too fast or are conflicting around here.
I recall reading that instead of posting a new reply, a member is encouraged to edit their post instead.
So much for that.

5/ Editing You can edit your posts and add extra text. If no one has replied since you last posted, please do this rather than making a new
reply.

You should still do that. After the two hours are up, if someone hasnt posted, you have to add another post. although, by that point, you probably
dont really need to.
the edit feature turns off because you can do spelling right after, and any other use would simply detract from the integrity.

Age of this phenomenon must have been reported to your satisfaction, but "Why" is such a philosophical question.

I tried to go back and edit my highschool years but my haircut gave me away.
