So is the prime suspect a guy with pointy ears named Nero?

Oh, wait, that was red matter. Nevermind.

WELL if i was going to cause complete chaos in a city make everyone think there is a nuke in the city that could go off aand level it and to make it worse one of the major escape routes is now gone oh my! if it was told that a stolen suit case nuke was in city there would be mass panic as people did everything they could to leave and yes they are a real thing we made some back in the 60s if i remember it right it used same warhead as a Davy crocket shoulder fired nuke . blast not powerful enough to destroy a city atlanta size but what do the people know.

Okay why the hell are they talking about red mercury when it's supposed to not exist? Why do they risk a panic by disclosing that? This smells fishy.

Because they used it to catch out some terrorists in Africa. They went frantic trying to locate sources of Red Mercury, and even ended up being stung by investigators offering to sell "red mercury". Whether or not it really existed didn't matter, the fact they wished to obtain materials that they intended to use to cause mass destruction was enough.

It only took one person to spread a rumour that red mercury could be found in anything from old televisions to telephone handsets, that they started buying them up and tearing them apart.

Other than it being April Fools, "red mercury" was long ago used as the code word for Li6D, which actually IS used in thermonuclear weapons.

It's neither red, nor mercury.

Maybe the guy had some cinnibar, it's the red ore from which mercury can be refined.

Could call it red mercury, cause thats what it is.

Red Mercury is a made up substance that's how Spock in the new startrek movies made a black whole to stop a sun from going supernova

Yea I was led to believe it was originally a code name for a soviet era fusion weapon rather than a substance.

Sounds like someone was watching Reds 2 when it was on again the other night. Not sure it's even a real thing other than as a collectible glass or a car.

Red Mercury is a thing...the Soviets tried for years to create / perfect the stuff, as it GREATLY enhances the destructive yield of nuclear weapons...the entire effort led to the creation of the so-called 'briefcase nukes' during the 1980's, thanks to the RM were capable of an estimated 5Kt to 10Kt...enough to wipe out a major town or small city. Many of the briefcase nukes went 'missing' after the fall of the Soviet Union, although realistically they were probably sold on the black market.

But the RM is a real thing.
