I am not fully sure if this is the right place to ask at or no, but I'll ask anyway. Is there an official IRC server and channel where people from abovetopsecret hang out at?

not that ive seen there is no point any way because we have u2u's

Once you have 20 posts click chat and then log in to using your atspassword. Oh i'm in chat a lot so if you need help ask.

I prefer this format to IRC.
I feel like I can use the can and not 'miss' anything.
I found IRC too addictive and not very rewarding.
It's probably easier to keep thing to set guide lines also.

Rule of thumb: don't ask about irc, and don't go all lone-ranger and create a channel relating to ATS, it doesnt seem to be taken to very well. If you happen to find some ATS people on IRC, more power to you but don't expect much, ATS likes its current chat system and the admins don't want the extra suitcase of headaches that comes with IRC.

the sum of the matter is that an irc server is a huge amount of work, time, money, and skill for even a small amount of people. we've got thousands. there's just no way. Besides, it can only detract from what we do here.

I wouldnt necessarily say IRC takes up alot of money, its not a massive bandwidth hog unlike running high traffic web servers and doesnt have the system overhead of a database server. My personal server runs fine out of a 375Mhz box with less than 128Mb of ram on a weak DSL line.

Effort and such however are definately taxed when you start running a real IRC server (which almost always becomes a network to distribute the work and system load) As an active IRC admin I can say I wouldnt wish the crap I deal with on a daily basis upon anyone, least of all the hardworking staff of ATS. Once you get big eventually you get targetd by script kiddies and bot flooders, and from that point onward its an uphill battle to keep ahead of the llamas; the sheer size of ATS would definatley attract those kinds overnight if they put up an IRC server.

The one IRC feature I want the most is being able to keep a log. Sometimes I leave to get dinner and a breaking story happens. I want to know what people said about it

Well, sure, but how safe is communication trough the chat? It doesn't even use https. The reason why I was asking, is, because I - along with other people - run an private encrypted IRC network where we provide virtual hosts to every user to keep them anonymous.

I only see positive things with this solution, such as encrypted real-time chat, and the benefit of being anonymous. Well, if anyone is interested at all in such a solution, please say so, or leave an u2u and I'll get back with further information. Even if a small amount of people, researchers or whatever want somewhere to chat please let me know. Our network is somewhat private, not commercial and public.
