At the same time, the one responsibility our government does have - national defense - has been neglected in favor of programs good and bad.

I am still trying to figure out how spending 5 times more in money on "defence" than the other 10 top nations combined counts as neglect....

You and me both dude.

I think your OP is a bit hyperbolic. Funding for Meals on Wheels isn't being completely cut. So odds are no one will starve to death. They'll be busy freezing to death because the budget proposal does completely eliminate LIHEAP.

It boggles the mind that you can claim that our national defense has been neglected when even under Obama it was STILL the most funded military in the world.

And was also reduced to pre-WWII levels. Much of the ships in the navy, for example, are decades old and well past their scheduled decommission date. They should have been replaced by younger versions by now. And let's not even get into the age of our nuclear arsenal. I suppose old bombs don't ever have any issues of any kind ...

The military is working on crumbling infrastructure same as the rest of us. It needs an overhaul.

But I suppose we can let it fall apart because we don't have any geopolitical foes at all and none of them are working to advance their technology or would ever think of taking advantage of the situtation. It isn't like any of them have millions of young men who have no young women to create futures or have wrecked their land space enough to need to expand ...

Evidence suggests that more people were in favour of Trump's America than were in favour of Hilary's America.

Evidence actually suggests that you are wrong since Trump lost the popular vote.

Do you feel better for knowing and saying that?

Maybe churches and communities should do that instead of the federal government.

States and localities ...

I often wonder how anyone ever survived at all prior to the welfare state.

The problem is not funding but defence contracters taking the piss and overcharging or congress forceing the military to buy things they dont need instead of things they do need.

The military does not need more money! It needs a extensive overview on how its money is spend and for congress and the defence contractors to be held to account.

I though Obama had pretty much shown that just throwing money at a problem wont sort it.

While there are some things I disagree with in the budget, there are also things I do agree with.

Not a fan of it in it's entirety, but it's not a trainwreck, as far as I can tell.

I can't figure out what you people are talking about on the left or the right.

If you want to go back to survival of the fittest, move to fricking Africa and fight with the Hyena's and Lions and starving Africans for scraps.

If you want the homeless to starve on the streets, I would guess you had better not ever find yourself homeless.

If you want those who can't afford medical care to just die, I would guess you had better make sure you never run out of money when you get sick and can no longer work.

You're all just livestock to be exploited by the farm owners, you frickin dolts.

Keep fighting over non-issues so those who have the power can get on with their work while you slowly die.

If Trump can bargain down on Air Force 1, then that's a step in the right direction. The question is whether or not that model will be repeated.

Are we spending it on defense or are we spending it on War. I think that is the difference, but I could be wrong.

Maybe the military should learn to do more with less. Just like Trump is telling all the programs and agencies that are getting cuts. The Pentagon is the number one source of waste in the government and yet they keep getting rewarded for their ineptitude while everyone else has to suffer the consequences.

I mean the F-35 is something like $200 billion over budget. Yet not only do we continue to throw money at that failure of a project we continue to give Lockheed other contracts despite failing so horribly. How does that make any sense?

Were you similarly offended by the claim that more people voted for Trump than Clinton?

Or do you just find the rebuttal of that claim to be offensive?

Why don't you be charitable instead of forcing the government and tax-payers to be charitable for you?

The military has been doing more with less since the production levels of World War Two ended.

The Military Industrial Complex suppliers are the ones getting paychecks in this day and age, not the military itself.

It's amazing that "replacing hardware" translates to a need to increase the budget. If this # needs replacing, then the military damn well has plenty of money already to draw from to replace it. Why can't it use its existing budget to modernize?

My position is that government charity isn't. Not only that, but it's not in the COTUS anywhere as government's responsibility to personally care for us as citizens beyond ensuring we have a good climate to make our own way in life for better or worse.

That means there really is no provision for an individual welfare state from the Feds.

And for those who are complaining about how wasteful spending through government is for the military?

For cripes sake! Why on earth would you expect that to get any less inefficient or corrupt because we are taking about a government welfare program?! Of course it doesn't, and that money is filtered through multiple layers of bureaucracy with each of them skimming their own fat off the top to ensure they all get paid and have fat bennies and pensions for being good little civil servants.

This is in contrast to true charity where they live on donations and have to make each penny count or else they lose their funding. And often they rely on volunteer labor from people who really want to help as much as any actual employees.

Are their bad charities that turn into for-profit, non-profit monsters? Yes, there are and they quickly get exposed for it, but the government is one of the biggest scams out there.

From all the stars on your post I say you have the "popular vote"....forgive me but I wish to remain in the "discerning vote" camp. I intended to just ignore this OP because I suspected it would just turn into a liberal diatribe of recycled illogical and dogmatic sheep dip. However, I reconsidered, I was drawn to comment just like a moth to a flame or an Antifa to a Trump rally..... I just had to dive into that white hot flame of Socialist outrage.

I think the desire has passed but it's too late to ever go back, bring it.
