Can you share some of these qualities that you feel will lead us into the renaissance you've described?

I won't go into great detail because around here optimism falls on deaf ears, but just look at the rate of progress in the last 100 years. Indeed, fifty years. the world today simply does not resemble the world in 1960. Now look up a couple of authors. one is Steven Pinker. He's a complete rationalist. You won't get a bit of mumbo jumbo from him. Look at The Better Angels of our Nature where he discusses the tremendous DECLINE in violence in the world today. A blurb from Amazon:

Believe it or not, today we may be living in the most peaceful moment in our species' existence. In his gripping and controversial new work, New York Times bestselling author Steven Pinker shows that despite the ceaseless news about war, crime, and terrorism, violence has actually been in decline over long stretches of history. Exploding myths about humankind's inherent violence and the curse of modernity, this ambitious book continues Pinker's exploration of the essence of human nature, mixing psychology and history to provide a remarkable picture of an increasingly enlightened world.

The second author I recommend is Ray Kurzweil on the Singularity. A number of his books discuss the issue. one of them is The age of Spiritual machines which discusses his past successes in prognostication and his ideas for where technology is going in the very very near future. Note: It is rather diametrically opposed to Hawking's views.

And third; Elon Musk; Tesla, SpaceX, and the quest for a fantastic future Rather than listen to the naysayer, he's actually DOING it right now. Want a solar roof that costs less than your 50-year asphalts and will power your house? So much for fossil fuel.

If you're all worried about climate change, I highly recommend The Hockey Stick Illusion; climategate and the corruption of science I'm not a denier I've seen climate change, but the fact is we're being LIED to about it. It's being used politically to scare the living crap out of people. it is PARTICULARLY IRONIC that people here on ATS, who supposedly live on the slogan of Deny Ignorance, have swallowed this stuff hook, line, and sinker.

Now I'm sure there are many negative Nellies and Debbie Downers who fancy themselves experts in the field of Doom Porn and will "have concerns" over the resources I have provided here. It seems everyone is an expert on this stuff, for reasons known only to themselves. But the authors I have cited are accomplished in their fields, and most people here on ATS are not. Feel free to include me in that category if you want. but i have read these books and studied these issues, and for me they resonate a whole lot more than the woe-is-me ignorance from folks that, to me, have no credibility whatsoever. Feel free to continue with this pessimism, but all that means to me is that you are part of the problem. You have no solutions. These guys do. Get up out of your trough of self-pity and go make the change you pretend to want.

I think he is partially right, the stupid and greedy will probably become extinct sooner than expected but the rest of us will do just fine.

Odd thing to say for someone who can say so little if I recall last I heard hawlking was barley able to communicate at all and required assistance to even try to

Makes u wonder what he was asked to produce that answer

Imagine if u could only say so many words a hr

You first. Money where your mouth is and all that. You may not be worth saving because we don't need your attitude, but I'm betting most of us are. Bye bye!

Stephen Hawking might do better to stick to mathematics and cosmology. His hand wringing is getting a bit tedious. Aliens are going to get us. Artificial Intelligence is going to get us. Global warming is going to get us. It's one thing after another with him. I'm optimistic that humanity is on the verge of a tremendous renaissance that will increase the standard of living across the board and usher in a scientific and technological revolution like nothing we've seen before. Wallow in pessimism if you want but the Eeyores of the world will not prevail. I pity them because they must be very unhappy campers.

Yeah, he probably isn't a very optimistic guy considering his circumstances.

But we shouldn't have much longer to wait. We have the entire blueprint of what is going to happen, just waiting for the kick-off.

Stephen Hawking: Greed and Stupidity Will End Humanity Earlier than Expected

One of the major problems that will end us prematurely, is global warming. Call it willful ignorance or plain stupidity but the more we continue to ignore the effect that humans are having on the climate, the faster our extinction comes.

The one thing driving this ignorance about our climate is greed for the planet's resources.

AI and logic will also be our downfall. An intelligence full of logic will come to realize that humans are parasitic and in order for this world to survive, they must be eliminated.

I feel we are living in our last days, does anyone else?

Thing is, we are not all like that really, though I can agree that much of what he says has essence.
There's too much culture today of ignoring what is good sensible laws for people to abide to in any society, as against bad laws which get up peoples noses, therefore the former must prevail always.
The use of cell phones while driving being a perfect example, people who do that are just asking for trouble.
As for global warming, Hawking doesn't mention that, probably because it just might be out of our handle, however he does mention pollution which is something that can be dealt with in the immediate if the will is there, and in many ways it is being dealt with. Any protocols about global warming, if you need to include humans, should be addressed by replacement to pollution, which can take many forms, and not necessarily caused by humans per se either.

If AI were to be truly intelligent, it would recognize that messing with its creator is a less than optimal process.

Same goes for us.

Way I see it, its kind of an ingrained law of this place, and of course, the rogues are always accounted for.

Hawking seems to be fairly negative lately. Hope he realizes some important facets of reality, and to not worry so much.

Humans are much more than simple electrochemical machines.

Although I don't agree with your post, Hawking is the doom porn king! But your idea of the earth as a living organism the could send out antibodies to kill the plague of man is very, very interesting a reply to: Mictain

How Beautifully ironic that could be.

Hawking may actually have no control over what emits from his computer screen, it could all be done by a third person, without anybody being any the wiser.

He may already be senile, dementia or Alzheimers ridden, and no-one would be aware, because he doesn't change, he has no expression, he cant move, he cant articulate his thoughts, he cant do anything himself, other than what the computer screen says.......yet his brain is said to be his forte, and 100%.

How would one know if his brain no longer operates as it once may have?

He is 75 years old you know, many people have died, lost their minds, or become senile in the same time he has lived as an "Invalid".........or even much younger.

Is Stephen still with us? or is it someone else?

I bet no-one has even bothered to test him........

Well brought up Markovian.

As well, sit by and watch genocides repeatedly and do nothing...

Won’t do a thing about global warming because the gas and oil powers in America elect a dunce like Trump...

…Probably doesn’t have long to go

the world didn't give power to the North Korean Lunatic, he inherited it.

Yes you're right. But an AI would also see that some humans have what it lacks and needs: creativity.
We certainly have to change our ways. Give it time. I don't believe we're going extinct. Like the bunny population on an island without real enemies. A few always survive and start all over.

Pollution not caused by humans? What would that be?

Yeah, why are we allowing these idiots to build this AI technology in the first place. We do not need it. These people just want to gain prestige and wealth and will force this technology on everyone and profit extensively by doing so. We are suckers for believing we need it. It will be controlling our societies pretty quick. And this AI still will not be able to be understood, it just can't understand the diversity of the people's speech.

It’s still a part of the world. One looks at whatever occurs in this world as being a part of it not separate from it

Try being him. You might be just a tad jaded. He's a freaking genius. He's also stuck in a body that is not able to function without help. He can't even speak without help from computers.
What would you feel about this world and god if you were him? Can you even trade places with him for two seconds?
You might have a different outlook on this planet if you were him.

The "fundamentalists" will say he's deluded and destined for hell.
The liberals will agree with him to a point.
And the ones who think humans are a plague on the planet will cheer him on. Yet, no one stops for 2 seconds to imagine what it must be like to be stuck in a body that will not function as it should, with a mind that understands more than most humans on this planet. Must suck.
