"WASHINGTON — Medicare's new prescription benefit will cover sexual performance drugs, like Viagra, in addition to medications for such ailments as high blood pressure and heart disease, program officials confirmed Monday.

The move into what some consider "lifestyle" — rather than life-saving — pharmaceuticals is being criticized by conservatives, who see it as an unnecessary frill for a program that already is projected to cost at least $400 billion over its first decade. "

Sure, why not just throw money away with both hands. Lets give illegal aliens better sex lives too. Lets just pass out "little blue pills" at the borders down in Texas, Arizona, and California.

so dr..............do you feel that old folks shouldn't have an active sex life too??

how OLD are you? obviously at an age that whether you are able to perform or NOT isn't in your realm of knowledge.

you need to be a bit more considerate of older gents who might need some help from time to time.
you'll be there one of these days.....and you might need the extra little BOOST.

also...........i might be assuming incorrectly.........i'm not certain your a male. but if you ARE a male then you might want to reconsider your stance! if your a female.........then when your older you might want your fella to have a bit of help!!

ahhh, isn't that nice of them. So concerned about my neighbor down the street who makes a buck or so an hour less than my husband. Why, he shouldn't be inflicted with this terrible health problem now, should he? I mean, everyone deserves a healthy sex life!!! Meanwhile, Just about every step I take hurts....my house is a disaster because there's so many things I can't do, and of course can't expect anyone else to. And, well, gee, oh ya, I'll send that check in the mail for the $20,000 in medical care I owe you right now!!!! And, of course, I'll walk, crawl, whatever I can do, to journey that 7 miles into town to the job that will eventually pay me that $20,000....maybe after a year in a half!! I realize that I am lazy, and deserve nothing if I don't......

NOT!!!!

there is something seriously wrong with their system.....I don't care....

it would be nice if we could totally can the entire medicare system and go to a different kind of healthcare delivery system altogether..........

but since we can't for now...........i think that a medication that helps someone to live a normal life should be covered.

that's my opinion.............and you've got yours.

why shouldn't people on medicare receive all the same drugs that other people do? seems fair.

gee, I don't know, are they still refusing to pay to have a women's tubes cut? If so, it is definately not fair....what, a women can poison herself with a bunch of hormones in hopes of not getting pregnant, but heaven forbid the men should be denied the opportunity to make the babies to begin with?

wow............didn't know that ins plans were still not covering tubal ligation.

i knew some had waiting periods for 12months after ins goes in to effect but wasn't aware that some plans wouldn't cover at all.

that does stink.

This they will do. Its too much. The question is...will they pay for breast implants for the older women that feel the sagging parts are causing them to feel uncomfy for the "new man" to see them nakee?

IMO the only thing that medicare should cover is emergency services and even then only to minors or the mentally or physically disabled.
If yo are over 18 with a healtyh mind and body I shouldn't have to pay any of your medical bills. I have my hands full paying my own and my families.

It's not my responsibility to pay for some older (i'm kinda old myself) dude to enhance his sex life. When and if I find myself in need of that kind of medication, you can bet I won't be hitting up the government for it.

Geez, where does it stop? Are we going to be paying for "enlargement" surgery for men and "tightening" sugery for women, next?

we're talking about MEDICARE not MEDICAID. medicare is the"insurance plan" for the ELDERLY........when you turn 65 you have medicare.

i believe you are confusing it with MEDICAID.............which is healthcare coverage for the poor. in order to be eligible for it you have to have an income at the povery level.........have so many dependents.....so forth and so on.....

i believe you got turned around a bit.

So my tax dollars pay to get old people hard, but not to get old people high? That's not very considerate. Considering Marijuana could cure, with placebo effect alone, 80% of age related medical complaints in America, I think the pharmaceutical lobby had more to do with this amendment that the quest for a healthy populace.

Take the money out of politics, and the pond scum will have no source of food. In time they will die and leave behind a tasty, edible crust.

No I disagree with both.
Anyone over 65 has had at least 4o years of working to sve up for retirement, purchase insurance etc.
If thier health after retirement wasn't important enough to them to plan for why should it be important to me?

I agree, from the point of view of cold, calculating evolution (of which I am an enormous fan). People should take care of themselves, and failing that, should be taken care of by their family whenever possible.

Of course if we're trying to masquerade as a caring society a little more paper mache might be necessary. The cracks in manifest destiny are showing through, and it looks rotted, drippy underneath.

Honestly, I just want a society that's honest about what it's doing - spreading it's seed in the stream of history in utter disregard for the other contestants in the perpetual race towards evolutionary continuance.

The eskimos put their elderly on an iceberg when they became a burden. We aren't quite there yet, and that's probably a good thing. Old folks should have more of a role in society, in the teaching of youngsters, in the watchdog role; the guardians of history like. It's obvious they're bored if Viagra Rights are more important than Free Speech.

Actually, you aren't paying for it.....the money you are paying in is going into treasury bonds, which has been blown by our fine government to the extent that they are probably planning on defaulting on them.
The people who are over 65 now are the ones who worked their tails off, fought in WW2, paid into that system and took care of their parents' retirement, made rockets that went to the moon, put televisions and phones in your home, developed the finest medical treatments in the world, came up with that little machine you are using to post your little messages onto the internet, developed our economy into one of the greatest in the world, brought the living standards of about every nation on this earth at least a few steps up, and basically built the america you now live in. And, probably help alot of those college graduate get through school. It is our generation that blew it!!!
So have some respect for crying out loud!!!

What, a bunch of corporate loons and shifty stock dealers robbed them of their pensions.
Their kids couldn't hold their marriages together, decided it was easier not to work, lived high on the hog, wasted so much in resources it's rediculous, and just had to have every new fangled gadget that come out. They've put themselves so far into debt they will never get out, and put our nation so far into debt it will never get out. They've destroyed the country that their parents worked so hard to build.
And, their kids are just a bunch of selfish little spoiled brats who think they should have whatever they want, that they deserve outrageous salaries on the merit of a peice of paper that they devouted a whole four years to obtain!

does anyone know if you can NOT have medicare??? i mean like say donald trump..........or bill gates.............when they are 65..........can they be refused medicare???

i think it would be an excellent proposal to eliminate the MEDICARE option for people that have incomes over XXX amount of dollars.........those folks could be taken off the medicare rolls.........

leave the medicare for the truly low income elderly that need the assistance.

That's the way it was designed, but of course nothing is perfect so I'm sure there are errors and a fair share of fraud. The system was supposed to balance the beam, between the haves and the have nots, in terms of life expectancy.
