Freedom of Speech; definition from google: the power or right to express one's opinions without censorship, restraint, or legal penalty.

What exactly does this mean to you... (this discussion will not revolve around legal restrictions such as shouting fire in a crowded theater)

To me it is pretty simple even if I think you are a gibbering idiot I will defend your right to stand up and make a fool out of yourself.

Shouting people down till they leave is not a victory for anything this country stands for.

I personally think Van Jones is a race baiter, possibly a racist... but I would argue for and defend his right to be a speaker at any location that was willing to bring him in to speak.

KKK wants to talk... sure thing again I have no problem with people standing up and making a fool out of themselves.

To the folks in the other thread that seemed to think it was just between the chalupa protesters and the speaker... what about the people that came to listen, or came to learn... or heck maybe do something silly like engage in a dialogue with the speaker if they had a question or a disagreement.

That is it... lets have at it, what does Freedom of speech mean to you?

Freedom to say what you want, but not freedom from the consequences of what you say.

Frankly its expressed opinion unimpeded. And your speech cannot impeed anothers via control of the media or other platforms of communication.

Im fine with demonstrations to get your voice heard in that regard, but violently against obstructing the opposing outlook as that destroys the very nature of free speech and democracy

Anybody can say anything about anything or anybody.

High praise or low total defamation is OK with me.

Freedom of speech is free expression.

Be it in words, print, online, in song, dance, the clothes you wear, how you speak.

You can use your freedom to disagree with anything anyone says.

But the moment you silence someone, the moment you infringe upon another's rights, then you have lost my support.

It's an ugly thing when people start justifying suppression of expression.

It's even uglier when so many favor it.

The market of ideas should be open all the time. 24/7.

Like a market, bad ideas are not purchased and adopted.

Good ideas are.

But everyone should have the right to bring their ideas to market.

Fascists, Nazi's, communists, socialists, many different ideologies and religions silence free speech. They justify it to promote their ideas.

The reason they silence others is because of the fear that another's idea may be better than their own. They silence others because they are afraid of being wrong.

They silence others because they know they are wrong.

I know what it isn't.

Shutting down speech I disagree with.

Anything else ?

Fair game.

In the end they are just mere words.

Maybe schools should start teaching Sticks and Stones, but words will never harm me again,

Anyone should be able to express themselves how ever, where ever and when ever they choose.

Others should have the same right to call you out on your lies and stupid BS as well.

I completely agree with you, that is part of free speech.

It's freedom of expression with this in mind:

“Being all equal and independent, no one ought to harm another in his life, health, liberty, or possessions.”

I think it's imparitive in a free society to teach what the basic social contract is, so that you can keep in mind if your freedom of speech does society any good, or your just a selfish prick creating tension to make people pop.

I don't think the government should restrict speech, but I do think as human in the social contract you should self regulate your own self importance.

I like to keep this in mind when acting in public.

Act only according to that maxim whereby you can, at the same time, will that it should become a universal law.

But then again I don't think I am so important my self expression is so important I need to harm others mental space.

Freedom of speech, in danger because of the push for an end to "fake news". What most seem not to get is that the TV station that claim to give you news-world or other, are not obligated by LAW to tell you the truth. They are with in their legal right to outright lie about anything and everything as they own your viership. The push to end this, will also threaten free speech as we know it, effectively having us apply our own bondage. Fake news in an of itself, is a topic that can lead us to a deep consipracy of an actor based reality. a reply to: Irishhaf

For me, freedom of speech means freedom to use a lot of word that are against ATS' T&C policy. Sometimes "socially acceptable" terminology just doesn't have the same effect as profanity. ATS must not be on board with the whole 'freedom of speech' thingy.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think profanity is always the solution, but nothing communicates how pissed off one might be like a nice fat F-bomb.

It's being able to say "nazism is hateful and intolerant"
While also being able to say "Islam is hateful and intolerant"

They're BOTH hateful and intolerant and BOTH should be ridiculed and mocked

"Freedom of Speech" is guaranteed by the 1st Amendment in the constitution.

The 1st Amendment ONLY restricts the government.

Question then, lets call it a an addendum to the original post...

can we really call ourselves a free society if groups of people (either side right or left) are running around shutting down speakers because we disagree with their thinking?

I get that the actual amendment is written specifically with the govt in mind, but over the last 200+ years it has been expanded to encompass the people as well. (in my opinion)
