It isn't in the nature of politics for the second party simply to disappear without being replaced. If no other replacement came forward, the single party would simply split in half and renew the struggle.
In analogous cases, like the current state of the Labour party in Britain, a party that is in true crisis faces the possibility of splitting and/or facing challenges from newer rivals.
A re-structuring of the party system is made more difficult by the way the present two have got embedded into the legal structure of elections- though not as difficult as it would have been if "state funding of parties" had been adopted.
All the same, the long-term future may hold two major parties with completely different names. The Deplorables and the Snowflakes? No reason why not- "Whig" and "Tory" both began as hostile nicknames.

One party system??? Another reference toward wanting an authoritative type of government. Suppressing and attacking the press, circumventing government procedures, wanting only his view to be accepted, and now he wants only one party to agree with his every whim! WAKE-UP PEOPLE, this guy is talking like a wannabe dictator. I smell impeachment proceedings if he continues to go down this road.

Yup.

But his die hard supporters are so stuck up his ass they can't see their noses or what's right in front of him.

Thank god for the press.

Don't The People elect our government? If we have a one party system, it's because there is only one party offering people what they want. Should we have a forced two party system, even if the 2nd party sucks? If democrats would stop with their foolishness, they will be able to gain power back.

I don't know.

Is it?

What do you think, and what examples can you think of.

From one party wiki:

Most one-party states have been ruled either by parties following the ideology of Marxism–Leninism and international solidarity (such as the Soviet Union for most of its existence), or by parties following some type of nationalist or fascist ideology (such as Italy under Benito Mussolini), or by parties that came to power in the wake of independence from colonial rule. One-party systems often arise from decolonization because one party has had an overwhelmingly dominant role in liberation or in independence struggles.

One-party states are often, but not always, considered to be authoritarian or totalitarian. However, not all authoritarian or totalitarian states operate based on one-party rule. Some, especially absolute monarchies and certain military dictatorships, have made all political parties illegal.

Does the wiki mentions what happens when one party does what the Dems are in the process of doing and makes itself politically irrelevant because no one wants to vote for it?

We kind of already have a one party system. I mean, realistically...trump is pretty liberal. And realistically, Hillary was pretty conservative in her policies. What really was the difference between the two.

Would Hillary of done more for the environment? And more for Women's rights? Is that the only difference.

We need to wake up ATS and start promoting third party candidates right now! for the next election.

The Dems are most likely going to win a lot of seats in 2018. Trump has upset and underwhelmed so many people with his divisiveness and incompetence.

Not likely, the Dems have 25 Senate seats up for re-election, Republicans only 8. And many of the Dem seats are in red states, like West Virginia, where Trump won by 40 points. Not to mention in recent mid-terms, Dem turnout has been pathetic. It will be a tall order for Dems just to hold serve with where they're at.

Lol, no such bird exists. There isn't a group that encompasses everything everyone wants. The only thing that would even come close would be radical centrism because it incorporates both liberal and conservative solutions to a problem. For example, a radical centrist's answer to the immigration issue would to be legalize those here so as to make them adherent to our laws and taxes AND build a wall and/or place troops on border to minimize further incursion.

Lol no at best wishful thinking. The dems are basically acting like spoiled children over trump winning but the dems are not in a position to win anything for a long time! When the dems party decides its all the "white mans fault" the white dems leave and vote 3rd party! When the california governor decided hey that 115 million dollars that was supposed to go to middle class student grants is used to pay for illegal immigrants the dems lose the middle class americans. Its over dems you failed and failed hard! When dem leadership is comprised of people like nancy peloski who is a total nut job even by californian standards your party is dead!

When you need to literally prop up your political front running candidate with a doctor and a team of security so she can walk and talk to the people and figuratively prop her up with answers to debate questions and 1.2 billion in funding and still lose your party is dead!

It will never be a one party system but i would expect more libertarians, green party ect then dems in the future lol they are not headed into a more centered direction but are getting more extreme with white anger, more extreme with the gay agenda, more extreme with gun control and mj drug legalization!

I can offer you two examples from British history of parties going into a steep decline and then bouncing back.

The Conservatives were heavily defeated by the "Liberal landslide" of 1906. But that was the last election the Liberal party ever won.

When Maggie Thatcher was at the height of her powers, the Labour party was down and out to the point that some people on that side were claming it was bad for democracy. But then we got Tony Blair.

The Canadians will know- wasn't there an election when the Canadian Conservative party was reduced to three members in the national parliament? I think this was in Maggie's time, because the British Socialists were salivating about it.

In short, the gloating is probably premature.

But they're not becoming irrelevant.

We've seen this play out many times before.

How quickly people forget because they confuse hope with reality.

Social security, 40 hour work week, child labor laws, anti discrimination laws, equal rights, unemployment insurance all from liberals, mostly democrats, what have conservatives republicans ever given to the American people but tax cuts for the rich.

The one party for Trump and the republicans is called the one percent party!

Clinton did a hard pivot to the left thinking she needed to reel in the Sanders Socialists, and lost just enough Independents and right leaning moderates to make a difference. She had neither the platform nor campaign as in the 2008 primary. Because of her peculiar pivot, she chased people into the arms of Johnson, and even Trump.

Trump did a hard pivot to the right because he needed Evangelicals to show up, then lost his shot at left-leaning moderates, driving those moderates into the arms of Clinton and Johnson.

Clinton touts this "Third Way" which I'm not fond of, but "get." Both parties have a lot of work to do. The margin of victory was pretty slim for Trump considering it came down to a few counties in a few states flipping the electoral votes to his side.

Whichever party moderates its message should win the mid-terms. Forget the Millennials, Latinos, Evangelicals, and senior citizens: Moderate Voter is the winning ticket for mid-terms.

None of those are good, yet, there would be idiots dancing in the street at the thought of it. As you can see here, there are those who seemingly relish the idea. Americans aren't going to learn until it all comes imploding down upon their pointy heads. That's the conclusion I have come to.
